Linton Miner Football

Linton Miner Football Everyone should already know about the miners!!

More reflection from the files of Daniel Phillips

Russell Goodman. #6 made an impact his freshman year in a big way. Starting at Inside Linebacker as a Freshman is something not seen in Miner Land often, but not only did it happen but Russell wound up with a whopping 135 tackles in 2022. Add 10 TFL, 1.5 Sacks, 2 Interceptions, and 4 QB pressures to that impressive start. He had double digit tackles in 6 contests, 8 or more in another 4 games. Most impressive was a 23 tackle game vs a tough South Putnam team, with 1.5 TFL as well.

Of Course-it was the sight of #6 running toward the south endzone, running out of gas at the Southmont 25 that is the long-standing memory. It happened at a Freshman, in the sectional game against the Mounties at the Roy. Linton had erupted for a 35-7 halftime lead behind 220 rushing yards from QB Hunter Gennicks. But Southmont had shut the Miner Offense down in 2nd half while putting up 22 answered point to pull within 4 at 35-29, and had the ball with 5:30 left. They had driven to the Linton 27 facing a 3rd and 8. QB Scott seemed to not see Russell and threw the ball nearly right at him! Goodman took it 58 yards to stun of Mountie fans and whipped the Miner fans into frenzy. He would have scored too but he had made the pick and ran from his own 17. It secured the 2A sectional crown for Linton.

That’s a heck of a freshman year, and 3 more to go! However 2023 started rough with an injury coming into the 1st game. It got worse with more injuries, and playing injured when we was in the games. He only played in 2 of the 1st 7 games of the year. He gave himself up on a 4th and 5 from the Monrovia 9 in the 4th quarter with a 7 yard run taking a direct blow to the healing shoulder that put him out for several weeks. That run set up a Miner TD in a back n forth game that went 2 overtimes before losing by 1. He came back offensively against NK in sectional, and was much more involved with 19 of his 26 total carries, and 76 of his 95 rushing yards coming in those last 3 games. He had a memorable game once more against Southmont with 2 catches for 99 yards; one of those a 65 yard TD. Obviously being out so many games, Russell’s defensive numbers were nowhere near his freshman year, and I’m sure not the season he wanted. He still had 45 tackles, 4.5 TFL, and 10 vs Monrovia, 8 against both Eastern and North Knox.

2024 brought Russell healthy again, and more involved in the offense with 424 yards rushing with 7 TDs. He added another 121 yards on 7 catches and a score. A key 41 yard catch and run TD vs Greencastle was a highlight. He had rushing totals of 60+ against Monrovia, Western and a season high 63 against the Tiger cubs in sectional rematch. Goodman also took snaps at QB in 4 games, passing for 88 yards on 7 of 14 attempts. On most squads, anyone with 100 tackles would likely be the top of the tackle chart, but Linton had an awesome pair of ILB’s with Russ alongside Corey Andrews (who had 195). Goodman had 9 TFL and a Sack, 8 pressures, 2 interceptions and 2 fumble recoveries. His big game was 16 stops against Western, and 10 vs Sullivan in Sectional rematch. Along the way Russell adjusted to playing Outside Linebacker opposite Paul Oliver which made the Miner Defense even stronger. And of course another highlight of Russell’s football career would have to be the leaping pick six he had at Indianapolis Lutheran in Semi State win with a catch and run of 13 yards to put Linton up 34-14 and eventually win 40-28.

2025 saw Russell open the season at Quarterback. As I’ve mentioned before, those 1st three opponents where top level, and the whole schedule was perhaps the hardest faced in many years. Week 4 saw Paul move to his familiar WB slot. He wound up the 2nd leading rusher for the season with 680 yards on a team high 237 carries. He had 89 yards against North Knox, 87 against Monrovia and over 70 in another 4 games. Once back at WB, Goodman added to the receiving corps with 11 catches for 312 yards (2nd high on team). Goodman accounted for 12 rush TDs and another 6 TD catches, as well as throwing one. This includes a 3 TD rushing game against NK, and 2 TD catches against the Arrows in the sectional tilt. He also accounted for 6 two-point conversions. He accounted for 132 points his senior year. At OLB most the season, he moved to Safety (a whole new position) as Sectionals started due to injuries to other Miner starters. Russell ended the season with 54 tackles, 26 of those solo. 5.5 TFL and 1 Sack with 6 Pressures. He added a Pick and a Fumble Recovery, and broke up 4 passes. The interception was a 20 yard return for another defensive score against Monrovia.

Russell Goodman represents Linton Miner Football in every way. Year after Year, Play after Play. He played several positions in his 4 years, QB, RB, WB, ILB, OLB and Safety. He has played hurt, played through pain. He kicked off 106 times averaging 35.3 yards per kick, as well as punting, and returning kicks and punts. Sitting at 1-2 to start his senior season also showed character to keep battling which resulted in another 2A sectional crown. 44-10 was Linton’s record in Russell’s 4 years. 3 Sectional Titles, 2 Regionals and a Semi State trophy, and the Miners 3rd trip to Lucas Oil for the State Championship Game (their 1st in Class 2A)

Russell’s career totals are impressive with 1,267 yards rushing on 276 carries. He had 22 Rush TDs and averaged 4.59 per carry. His passing totals: 350 Yards (27-67 40.3% 2 TD 4 Int). His receiving numbers: 21 catches 541 yards 8 TDs 25.76 per catch. He accounts for 1,808 Yards and 30 TDs between rushing and receiving.

Goodman had an amazing defensive career as a Miner. (2) 100+ tackle seasons, and a total 339. (91 Solo and 248 Assisted). Russell had 29 TFL and 3.5 sacks. 19 QB Pressures, with 4 interceptions and 5 Fumble Recoveries. He also broke up 8 passes. His 135 tackles as a freshman in 2022 ranks in the top 5 of all-time single season tackles. 339 total tackles are also going to be high up in the all time ranks once I finish the research.

I will always remember Russell as a versatile player, just like several Miners of 2025 and before. Willing to do whatever was needed. Goodman made so many memorable plays from several positions. It’s really hard to believe we have been through 4 years since that October 28 night as the Roy exploded in screams as Southmont’s pass was ripped out of the air by #6 seeming to save the season in one flashing moment. Congratulations to you Russell!!

I wanted to take a second and highlight a young man who came to Linton in 2023 and has left his mark on the Football program with the all-time season record holder in tackles, and so many memories of tremendous plays, hits, and enthusiasm. Linton has had some awesome Inside Linebackers over the year. It was would be quite the task to try and come up with the 2 top ILB's in Miner history. There is no doubt that #52/42 is going to be on a lot of lists.

I can remember clearly sitting in the booth covering the Linton North Daviess game in 2022 down in Cougar Valley. It was 36-0 Miners at the half and Linton dominating the then 4-1 Cougars. One guy caught our attention....at 6;1 205 as a Freshman wearing #4... he kept on getting to Hunter Gennicks in the backfield. At moments it seemed he couldn't be stopped. 8 Tackles, with 4 of those being TFL as well as 1.5 QB Sacks. 5 QB Pressures. I thought this was going to be a hell of a player, and that ND youth was going to make the Cougars a solid team. He finished that freshman year with 71 total tackles, 14 TFL and 8 Sacks.

I had no idea that come August of 2023 I would learn that Corey would be in Miner Red and running onto the Roy and become an instant factor of Linton's defense these next 3 years. In his 1st year at Linton as and OLB opposite Paul Oliver he registered 85 tackles, which led the Miners, as did his 26 solo stops and 59 assisted tackles. He also led Linton in TFL with 19.5, just .5 ahead of Oliver, and his 7 sacks topped the team. He had season high 15 tackles vs Eastern, as well as 12 against Western and 11 in the season ending loss to Southmont in OT. His 5 TFL against Eastern were a team record (at least until the following year!).

2024 was a special season in Miner Land with a well-earned trip to Lucas Oil to play for a 2A State Title. It would be the Flying Jets of Adams Central's year, but not withstanding a tremendous run by Linton with insane wins of Brownstown Central and Indianapolis Lutheran, not to forget two wins over Sullivan. Corey moved to ILB alongside Russell Goodman forming a memorable tandem that saw a combined 295 tackles between them! Of course the chase to break a long standing individual tackle mark held by Brent Sparks in 1986 of 186. There had been nobody close to it despite 140 from Jacob Burris in 2001, 131 from Chance Howard in 2017 and 134 from Stephan Sparks in 2009…. How about that group?!! Russell Goodman, his ILB running mate, had 135 in his freshman year 2022.

All Corey did was manage double digit tackles in 12 of 15 games, with a season high 21 in week 2 against Monrovia. That would be 3rd highest in a game Miner lore since 2000 (25 from Chance Howard 2017 vs Monrovia). He also had huge games when needed most in Regional vs Brownstown (19 tackles),and in the stat game vs Adams Central (18). His 12 solo stops vs Monrovia was just 2 shy of the Miner Record of 14 held by John West in 1986 vs Central. He had 16 assisted tackles against Western, and 15 in Sectional championship vs Greencastle. Andrews ended 2024 with 16 TFL, with a high of 3.5 against the Bulldogs, and 16 pressures on the QB; even getting in on 7 passes defended with an interception. Total that all up—66 Solo Tackles, and 129 Assisted (beating the old record of 110 by Dalton Hardisty in 2004), and you had a new Miner record for total tackles in a season with 195 that had stood for 38 years.

Of course with that huge number came selections to All-State Junior teams and Pre-Season all state selections from several media and coaching organizations.

2025 was indeed a test from the outset with perhaps one of the toughest Miner schedules assembled, and a 2-2 start. Yet Linton won their back to back sectional, but fell to eventual state runner-up Brownstown Central who got revenge from 2024. Finishing 9-4 with 13 games as compared to 15 in 2024, plus offenses keenly aware of the start ILB and thus running away from Corey led to lower numbers but still an impressive senior season. 127 total tackles are still in the top 10 in individual season tackles since 2000, and seven double figure games with his highest tally being the regional tilt with Brownstown. He hit 15 twice in games against North Decatur and Northview (again rising to the occasion in big game match-ups). He had 10 solo against the Chargers, and 8 against the Braves with a total of 47 for the year, with 80 assists. He added 10.5 TFL (a high of 3 vs Sullivan) and 4.5 sacks (2 vs Greencastle) with 5 QB pressures. He was more involved in the pass defense with 16 passes defended.

Let’s not forget Corey was a starter in most games on the offense either on the Offensive Line or as a Tight End. I recorded 88 pancake blocks in his 3 years at Linton. He didn’t see much in the way of passes although he did have a memorable catch and score finishing with 2 catches for 28 yards, and of course the traditional lineman rushing attempt of which he gained 6. He was more of a runner in his freshman year at ND with 35 carries for 121 with 2 TDs, as well as 2 catches for 9 yards.

That all amounts to a monster 3 year career in Linton for Corey Andrews. I believe in terms of Linton records I can only use his 3 years at Linton in Miner Career totals, and because of that he falls short of the Career mark of 432 of Brent Sparks (1984-87) with 407. If you add the 71 from his ND frosh year it sums to 478. It’s the same with Solo tackles as Spark owns the record with 179, and Corey has a 4 year total of 180, but 41 of that came at ND which leaves the Linton total at 139. It DOES look like he broke the career assisted tackle total with 268 in his 3 Miner years (30 from ND totaled 298). The surpassed 258 from Jacob Burris (2000-03) and 248 from Russell Goodman (2022-25). Russell was no slouch as with 339 total tackles in his career. Think of this- Goodman and Andrews combined at Linton: 746 total tackles.

Congratulations to you Corey… best of luck for your next step and football journey. Yours will be hard steps to fill…. Be the Menace!!

From the Vaults Of Daniel Phillips.... A look at the Pass Catchers:

The Miner Receiving unit had big holes to fill with Hayden Feltner’s graduation, and Paul Oliver’s assumed QB role coming into 2026. However, as we saw, Russell Goodman opened at QB for the 1st three games and Paul was at WR. He hauled in 15 passes for 176 yards and a TD, in a situation where defenses knew he would be the target of most passes. In fact Linton passed 52 times in those 3 games with 31 in Oliver’s direction. With Oliver’s shift to QB in week 4, Oliver Stephens stepped up as the big target, and the Senior in his 1st season as WR netted 23 receptions for 463 yards and 5 TDs, averaging 20.13 per catch. The receptions and receiving yards were by far the leading numbers on the team.

Stephens because a big threat and a vital part of the Miner offense as the season progressed. His biggest games were his last two in which he caught 3 passes for 78 yards and a score, and in the Brownstown loss with 7 for 133 yards and a TD. For having just 2 catches in his first 3 games, for just 15 yards total, it was nice to see him become such an asset. He caught at least 1 pass in 11 of 13 games, and had a TD reception in 5 of the last 7 games. I wonder how well he’d have done with another year at the WR position. Once Goodman returned to WB, he also became a receiving threat and had 11 catches for 312 yards and 6 TDs. He had 2 TDs against the Golden Arrows in the Sectional win. His biggest output was 63 yards in a TD pass vs Northview, and had several games with 2 receptions. Cooper Smith missed a lot of action due to injuries but contributed 6 catches for 147 yards, including a 2 catch-115 yard night against North Decatur. Renn Cottingham, just a sophomore, served notice of a bright future before a season ending injury in week 9. He had 3 catches for 63 yards, and 43 of those yards coming after the catch. Speaking of which, Stephens had 255 YAC to lead the team (463 total yards, Goodman with 148 (of 312).

Several other Miners logged in receptions: Corey Andrews saw action at Tight End, and caught a memorable score against Boonville of his 2 catches for 28 yards. Aiden Sparks caught 2 screen passes for 78 yards. Coltyn Andrews didn’t see much offence until late in season, and the freshman had 2 catches for 29 yards before he was injured and out for multiple games. Another freshman, Ivan Montgomery made a name with 3 catches for 84 yards and a TD vs Mitchell, as well as a couple 2-point conversions. Dalton Reed had 1 for 7 and Stephen Boulanger 1 for 19 yards. Ryder Ward had…well…it was a hook and ladder which by rule isn’t a catch but is put down as passing yards… .so he had 7 yards!! Stats…gotta love it.

Another stat to look at is targets. It was clear the 1st three games that any pass was an attempt to get Paul Oliver the ball. It’s also worth noting that Corbin, KY and Arch Biship Alter, OH were 2 of those first 2 opponents, not to forget the Monrovia Bulldogs. In the end Oliver Stephens was the target on 39 passes, with Oliver at 31, Goodman 18 and Smith at 17.

Linton highest passing output of the season was 188, which happened twice: Mitchell (on 7 of 15 passing) and Eastern Greene (8 of 14). Least Yardage was 15 against Greencastle on just 2-3 passing (but a 46-10 win). Most attempts was 25 vs Brownstown; Most Completions 11 vs Brownstown. Most TD passes in a game was 3, twice; Mitchell and Sullivan. There were only 7 interceptions thrown in 2025; 4 by Goodman, 3 by Oliver. Most in a game was 2 by Goodman vs Monrovia.

Career wise for the graduating Seniors:

Paul Oliver: 99 catches 1,641 yards, 23 TDs 16.58 per catch
Russell Goodman: 21 catches 541 yards 8 TDs 25.76 per catch
Cooper Smith: 30 Catches 575 yards 5 TDs 19.17 per catch
Oliver Stephens: 23 Catches 463 Yards 5 TDs 20.13 per catch
Dalton Reed: 1 catch 7 yards 0 TD 7.00 per catch

More scribbling from the vaults of an old Linton Miner Tight End:

Passing:

There was a time when Linton rarely passed the ball, but it has become a vital part of Miner Football. Still the Miners ran the ball 78.6% of the time in 2025. Miners started the season with Russell Goodman at QB in the opening 3 games, and possibly 2 of the toughest opponents on the schedule. Paul Oliver moved to QB in week 4’s meeting with Sullivan with Russell back at his familiar WB position.

For the season Linton’s passing total was 1,415. This was 813 yards fewer than the 2,228 of 2024 yet right inline with the 10 year average of 1,260 per year from 2014-2023. Paul Oliver accounted for 1,034 of that on 45 of 86 passing (52.33%) with 13 TDs and 3 interceptions thrown. Goodman for 262 yards (20-53 (37.7%) 1 TD 4 picks). Drake Netherlain and Harrison James contributed the remaining 119 yards on 5 of 9 passing with1 TD pass.

Oliver’s season high for a game was 188 yards on 8-14 vs Eastern Greene, but also had 182 (Brownstown Central 11-25), 158 (N.Decatur 4-5) and 140 (Sullivan 5-9). With a season high 3 TD passes in that Sectional championship over the Arrows. Goodman’s high was 92 (8-18 vs Monrovia in week 2. Goodman had not only to face the Bulldogs on the road, but Corbin, KY and Archbishop Alter as well.

The all time high was Austin Karaszia’s stellar year of 3,436 in 2011 (244-361 67.6% 42 Td 12 INT). No surprise that 2011 also is the record for most passing yards in a season (team) with 3,467. It’s also the game high record of 408 in a loss against North Daviess in 2011 by Karaszia (his junior year).

Career Leaders:

*Just like in Rushing, I don’t have season totals from before 1996 except what I’ve pieced together from various record keeping through years. I don’t have any numbers to account for Jarman Lannan, whose name shows up in older ‘records’ for TD passes in a game…in ‘87 and ’88.

2025 Paul Oliver 2,058 Yards (66-97; 46.9%; 23 TD 14 INT)
2000-Jeremy Newton 1,998 Yards (118-254 46.4% 19 TD 11 TD)

I sure wish I could find at minimum, season total for individual players pre 1995. A lot of great players in those years… Brent Sparks was a big offensive RB as was Jeff Suthard. JP Meurer, Justin Anderson, Tony Collins, Brian Mifflin, David Bowman are names from my past that I recall from the 80’s. If Mike Rose threw 44 times against North Knox is 169 I’d sure like to know how many yards he had passing that year!

Sad to see this come to my screen: Cory went to VU in my department, so we spent many school days talking Miner Football....and sports in general.

Cory David Flater, 50, of Linton, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday evening, January 21, 2026, at his home. Born on February 8, 1975, in Linton to David and Marsha (Luxton) Flater, Cory spent his life rooted in the town and community he loved so much.

Cory’s love of sports ran deep. On game days, you could count on him cheering for the Linton Miners, Indiana University basketball and football, Notre Dame football, the Dodgers, and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He had a knack for turning even a simple conversation about a game into an animated event, often punctuated with his trademark grin and quick wit. But more than anything, Cory will be remembered for his heart. His personality filled every room - radiant, funny, welcoming, and genuine. Cory was the kind of person who never met a stranger, and once you were his friend, you were his friend for life. His sense of humor and gift for physical comedy could lift anyone’s spirit, and he leaves behind countless smiles, memorable stories, and a lasting example of kindness.

More Miner Football Info from the Vaults Of Daniel Phillips

Rushing:

Linton rushed for 3,420 yards in 2025 (13 games). 262.08 per game. that's up from last years’ 229.87 per game. The all-time high I have is 354.87 per game in 2015, which also has the highest total yards in a season with 5232 (15 game).

Linton has had 6 years of averaging 300+ yards a game. 2015 (354.87), 2023 (325.75), 2016 (323.67), 2017 (315.09), 2004 (313.43), 2022 (306.07)

Paul Oliver led Linton with 977 rushing yards in 2025, but it truly is a misnomer because he played at receiver the first 3 games of the year, with 1 official rush attempt on a fake punt. That total is in 10 games so it's a 97.7 per game average. It did end a streak of 4 years with a 1,000 rusher, but the point has always been team at Linton with usually 3 (at least) Miners per season with good rushing numbers.

The record for most rushing yards in a season is Hunter Gennicks with 2,077 in 2022 (14 games 148.36/game). Linton has had at last one 1,000+ rusher in 14 seasons from 2000-25 (26 years). Four other years there were 900+ rushers. The top 10 I have from records I have are:

1-Hunter Gennicks 2,077- 2022
2-Matt Gamble 1,764- 1998
3-Adam Brewer 1,636- 2004
4-Tyler Meurer 1,524- 2016
5-Koye Kaiser 1,488- 2012
6-Jesse Voigtschild 1,408- 2024
7-Mitch Eberhardt 1,354- 2015
8-Evan Magni 1,305-2009
9-Ethan Brewer 1,231- 2006
10-Brent Sparks 1,208- 1987

Paul had a game high 196 rushing yards in week 4 at Sullivan, finishing the year with four 100+ yard rushing games, with another at 92. Also have to consider that is big margin games, he saw little action carrying the ball. 3 rushes against Eastern Greene
(45 yards), and just 1 carry for 25 against Mitchell. I've seen other teams run their star back 20 times in games like that just to pad stats. Paul would have had ginormous numbers had that been the case.

Evan Magni has the current record for yards in a game with 328 in 2009 vs Tecumseh. Mud pit. Matt Gamble had the prior record with 270 vs North Knox in 1998. Here are some other big rushing games that were tops in their seasons:

267- Ethan Brewer vs Springs Valley 2007
241- Adam Brewer vs Sullivan 2004
239- Hunter Gennicks vs Southmont 2022
238- Mitch Eberhardt vs Tecumseh 2015
235- Jesse Voigtschild vs South Vermillion 2024
217- Justin Suthard vs Springs Valley 2003
209- Kenton Helton vs North Knox 2010
205- Ethan Brewer vs Springs Valley 2006

Linton had multiple rushers as usual. Russell Goodman with 680 yards, a game high of 89 against North Knox. You could almost always count on 70+ yards from #6. But like Paul, in blowouts, Russell only had 2 carries total. He might have also been at or close to 1000 yards with a couple more games of 70+ yards. Aiden Sparks powered for 409 yards in his 1st season back in the backfield. He was a pleasant surprise. His highest output was 78 yards on 13 carries vs. Boonville, but also 70 yards on 10 carries vs Monrovia. Cooper Smith unfortunately was injured a bulk of the season, but when he was healthy he was a factor. He still ended with 343 years, and 116 vs Greencastle. And I think we all recall his 1st carry back from missing 3 games facing unbeaten North Decatur. He had 93 yards in that big game. Tate Gamble finished with 292 yards, a game high 67 vs NK. Renn Cottingham was just coming in to his own at WB but was lost for year in week 8. He had 266 yards at the time, and had 2 games with 71 yards rushing each (Sullivan, North Knox). Dalton Reed added 222, with a game high 116 against Mitchell.

Team high rushing was 456 vs NK. The record is 610 yards in 2017 vs North Vermillion

Goodman had the most rush attempts with 137. Oliver just behind at 118. Goodman high carry mark was 19 vs Monrovia, while Paul had 20 in his first game back vs Sullivan. Sparks had 14 vs Northveiw, Cottingham 13 vs Sullivan, Cooper 14 twice (NDecatur and Greencastle). Gamble had 8 vs Boonville.

The record for most rush attempt in a game is 41 by Jeff Suthard in 1984 vs Covington. Since 2000, the top was 33 from Paul Oliver in 2023 vs Greencastle.

As a team Linton had 545 rush attempts. 41.9 per game. Linton ran appx 78% of the offense. Miners game high rush attempts was 61 vs NK. Jeff Suthard holds the season high for Rush attempts with 224 in 1984. since 1998, Jesse Voigtschild holds the highmark with 213 (2024). next would be 198 from Hunter Gennicks in 2022, then 197 from Koye Kaiser in 2012. The Season Team record for rush attempts is 608 in..you guessed it.. 2015.
