A second chance opportunity after divorce, a death of a spouse, or the end of a long-term relationship is dating again (audible groan here). If you’ve made up your mind that you don’t want to spend the rest of your life alone, this really is your option to find someone because we don’t have a fairy Godmother who can wave her magic wand and make the prince/princess of our dreams appear. But, here’s the thing, dating doesn’t start with finding the right person, it starts with you being the right person. I call this “pre-dating” the work that you do on yourself before you put yourself out there and start dating. Why is this step so important? It’s important because instead of going along with what you feel or who’s interested in you, you are making a conscious choice to know yourself and when you truly know yourself, you will make a better decision.

Through my own divorce and my work with individuals on their journey after divorce, I know how difficult it can be. The expectations of life going in one direction have dissolved into a world of unknowns. I vividly remember one morning, the sun casting violet rays on the wall above where I slept. Perfectly still in my bed, I didn't move. Keeping my eyes closed, I hoped that it was all a bad dream and when I opened my eyes, the nightmare would be over. The amber sun cast away the shadow of night, a new day dawned. The gift each day has given me is discovering who I am on a deeper level then I ever knew possible, the opportunity to discover talents and strengths, and the privilege to build new healthy relationships. May your darkest nights always turn into your brightest days.
