When the ethereal spires of black cohosh move from delicate ivory spheres into full reign, it is difficult to imagine a more captivating queen. She casts her spell and beckons the gaze of her leafy, winged, and furry forest companions (and us human admirers).

Science has demonstrated the efficacy of Black Cohosh (Actea racemosa) in the realm of women’s health; mainly heralded for diminishing menopausal symptoms. She carries a bitter/pungent rasa with an inherently cooling energetic.

In my clinical work, I often turn to black cohosh flower essence when there is someone struggling with abuse/ violence related trauma. This magical plant and guardian of light/dark energies can support facilitation and release of the trauma and allow deeper processing to occur.

We have all been caught in stagnant dark roots at times….trapped and uncertain where to turn.

Black cohosh can foster the ability to confront toxic relationships (including releasing those toxic qualities within oneself as the embodied victim/survivor). A supportive cycle breaker who can allow destructive psychic forces to release. And free the shame seeds that we carry within.

Note: Sadly this is an "at risk" species and climbing due to over harvesting in the wild.

Healing trauma is mainly facilitated by process, not content.

Arranging flowers to the song of one’s heart and to the mantra of one’s soul. Embracing protective factors rather than vulnerabilities.

Learning when to feel safe and surrender one’s nervous system in a new environment

Closing books and exiting the podcast spiral to take a wise step forward into the universal garden of love and kinship.

Knowing when the rain comes, it is serving to find sanctuary in the glow of your inner sun.

It is nearly impossible to resolve trauma in isolation. Being in relationship with other living beings (flora-fauna-human) is essential to the process.

Welcoming a tiny new kitten (name TBD) rescued from the harsh elements who is healing through connection (((🐾🤍)))

Mushroom Monday! The bright orange hues of October 🔸🍁🔸beckon….in this case, created by the great Gaia.

A perfect time to spotlight Laetiporus sulphureus known as “Chicken-of-the-woods” which grows primarily on oak trees in the forests of Litchfield County and beyond. It is a natural reservoir of health promoting compounds including antioxidant a-glucan, a free radical destroyer. Studies are also published citing the antimicrobial, anticarcinogenic and and inflammatory properties of this woodland delicacy.

Harvest tree to table with mindful intention when the fruiting bodies are still tender (Late August/ early September = prime time to find in this area) & prepare in a cast iron skillet with ghee, spices, & herbs.

On Mother’s Day, I reflect upon all of the humans who i have touched souls with from a place of service since 2001. People of all ages across numerous treatment environments.

Many of these humans never knowing their biological mother and walking through life with a chronic hole of sadness. Those who have endured overt abuse or more subtle covert psychological abuse/ alienation from mothers who struggle with their own psychological demons. The difficulty related to placing one’s mother, or even more unimaginable one’s child to rest. And the contiuum of shame and sorrow associated with the intrinsic challenges related to mothering, conception, and self- identity.

One of the most powerful ways that I have connected with the archetype of the mother is being a witness to these stories through my clinical work. In vedic philosophy we refer to the power of divine unconditionally loving maternal energy as “shakti.”

When leaving our session yesterday, one of my dear clients expressed that she truly felt my love toward her. As love carries various meanings, sometimes the “L” word in a professional setting may be a springboard for concern or an ethics check in. But, not in this case. This instead was a beautiful testimonial to shakti.

The invisible energetic thread that arises through therapeutic work with clients that is safe, boundaried, pure, powerful, and a type of unconditional positive regard and universal protection. Something that humanistic psychologist Carl Rogers only scratched the surface of. It is a salve and a healing force from the divine consciousness that matches (even supersedes) any research based intervention.

Being called to work as a modern day “medicine woman” is as spiritual as it is clinical. And there is no greater joy that witnessing the embodiment of shakti in session. This translates into: authentic connection, trust, non-judgment, and deep compassion.

Sending Mother’s Day wishes to ALL women who carry this cosmic light inside; and to the men who honor this force within and are supporting a more beautiful earth. May our children, flora, fauna, and ways of living radiate fully in the balanced feminine.

It was a pleasure to attend the National Āyurvedic Medical Association (NAMA) Conference in the beautiful Sonoran desert. Tucson AZ represents a beautiful mix of vata + pitta doshic predominance colliding with the prolific Saguaro landscape (symbolic of the divine masculine). Stark arid elements birthing flowery watery precious spring life. Yin + Yang. A perfect container to soak in the infinite wisdom of Āyurvedic science + integrative research.

Āyurvedic herbology coalesces with North American herbal traditions quite beautifully! Carrying both with deep reverence as we support this world in great need of conscious care.

There is no such thing as a global one stop shop formula that is best for every single person on this earth. We need to examine each situation individually and honor everyone’s unique narrative. (See first comment!) This is an important step to decolonizing healthcare and respecting one another’s bodies and belief systems.

Research data and recommendations from qualified professionals should absolutely guide our decision making, but never automate it. Science is constantly in evolutionary flux, or it is not true science. Ten years from now, academia will beam its love lights onto new evidence based best practices that nullify or replace the old. Ten health and wellness providers with great credentialing may sit in the same room and prescribe differing remedies. Which one do you choose?

Harmful “bypassing” (spiritual or the equivalent) can occur when we use an organic or inorganic substance, movement practice, health related strategy, philosophical paradigm to become more “woke” and avoid the authenticity of our personal condition. Sometimes even the most beautiful of plants, pills, poses, or scriptures can be leveraged as vehicles for self-harm or non-serving behaviors toward another.

If we operate from the ecocentrism rather than egocentrism and approach our cognitions, decision making, and rituals from a place of balanced intuition we are positioned for success!

Co-partnering with a healing supporter who seeks to understand and respects your multidimensional human experience is of vital importance. Thus is is also in line with trauma sensitive, culturally informed treatment and should be universal baseline ethics for all employed in a healthcare service capacity.

Spring is starting to bloom here in the northeast 🌸🌿🌷🌱….

As the earth’s energies begin to biologically realign, this should serve as a reminder to us
human folk.

The energy we take in becomes the energy that runs every cell and system in our body.

This energy is taken in through ALL of the senses (what we see, hear, taste/eat, touch, and smell).

When we are depleted, our vessel has only one focus= survival.

Our body will down regulate, reprioritize, and steal from other areas if it is depleted. This is when we see things like hair loss, eczema, and amenorrhea.

If our system is depleted, an herbal protocol to assist with rekindling menstruation is not ideal. We need to focus on rebalancing and nourishing the reproductive system and surrounding layers.

If our nervous system is highly anxious and hyperstimulated due to occupational overload, then a medication or therapeutic modality will likely only band-aid the “feeling” symptoms, while the chaos continues to root within.

If we are dining on nutrient dense organic foods and in a constant chronic state of stress, then the food we eat will not be appropriately digested and metabolized.

Malnourishment will prevail.

Our body needs to achieve bioalignment and metabolic safety to heal and thrive.

It can not repair itself if It is constantly in a state of parasympathetic deprivation or survival mode.
