How do you monitor your blood sugar?

Using a blood glucose meter or continuous glucose monitor to test your blood sugar levels is needed for monitoring your blood sugar. Look below for more information on these devices and when you should check your blood sugar levels!

Monitoring your blood sugar (or blood glucose) is important for managing Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. There are two devices that are mainly used.

Blood glucose meter: A small portable machine used to check blood glucose levels. After pricking the skin, one places a drop of blood on a test strip in the machine. The monitor then displays the blood glucose level.
Continuous Glucose Monitor: These devices report your blood glucose levels in real time. They work through a sensor placed on your skin that transmits readings to a small recording device like your phone.

When should I test?
These are the times you may need to check your blood sugar:
Fasting
Before meals and snacks
Bedtime
Before exercise
To confirm low blood glucose
After treating low blood glucose levels and until blood glucose is in target range
Before and during critical tasks such as driving

Talk to your healthcare provider for more information on blood glucose monitoring!

Today’s cannabis is stronger than ever before.

On average, cannabis today has more than 3x the potency of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol--the mind-altering compound found in cannabis) compared to 30 years ago. That could mean greater risk for addiction.

And when cannabis use starts before age 18, the rate of addiction rises to 1 in 6.

Can you prevent diabetes?

If you have been diagnosed with prediabetes it is possible to delay or prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes. Follow these steps below!

Regular physical activity: Being active is one of the best ways to delay or prevent Type 2 diabetes. Try to get 30 minutes of exercise a day, if you don’t have 30 minutes, take shorter walks during the day!

Weight loss: Reaching a healthy weight can help lower your risk for diabetes. Losing even a few pounds will help.

Make healthy choices: Making small changes can add up to big rewards. Try things like cutting back on sodas and juice, include one vegetable every day for dinner, and choosing fruit instead of cake, pie or cookies.

Following these guidelines can help delay or prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes. For questions or concerns always make sure to contact your healthcare provider. Keep following along for more

THC affects brain development:

THC (the main compound in cannabis that makes you feel high), can mess with this process.

Your brain is still developing until you're 25 years old.

Using cannabis, a lot before your brain is fully developed can mess with memory, focus, and decision-making long term. That’s just biology, not judgment.

Cannabis can impact mental health

Cannabis can increase the risks of anxiety and depression—especially in people who start using at a young age or who have a history of mental health disorders.

Cannabis—which people also call ma*****na, w**d, pot, or bud—refers to the dried flowers, leaves, stems, and seeds of the cannabis plant. When individuals take it, they can experience a “high” that has different effects depending on the person. Individuals can consume it in many ways including smoking, va**ng, infusing it into food or drinks, and inhaling it through oils and extracts.

There are risks associated with cannabis use, including impairment and ability to control emotions. Prolonged cannabis use can lead to cannabis use disorder, which is when individuals struggle with controlling their dependency and use. The risk of developing cannabis use disorder is higher in adults who start using as youth.
