Many still ask why Tulman Eye Group mandates a retinal image done yearly. Below is shared by a colleague in another state and has been edited to use plain-language terms.

"A 53-year-old Caucasian woman with no prior eye or health history had been followed for 10 years by the same eyecare practice. She had undergone a LASIK procedure in her right eye and had been dilated before the procedure at the time, with no noted pathology (diseases)

Over the years, her routine exams showed no pathologies (diseases). She was managed for dry eye and mild presbyopia (need for reading glasses only) at various visits, each time demonstrating normal or near-normal vision and healthy retinal findings on dilated exams.

EIGHT MONTHS -- after her last regular visit, she presented with a gray shadow in the inferior nasal visual field OS, which progressed to a “static on a TV” sensation. Vision in her left eye had decreased over that last 8 months. Quick dilation and retinal scans revealed a large, dark , raised area along the superior-temporal area of the left eye. A retina specialist confirmed the patient had choroidal melanoma (ocular cancer) with fluid and orange pigment.

In the end, the family sued the eyecare practitioner for failure to detect the melanoma (cancer) eight months earlier, because records indicated that he had not used the proper imaging even though it was available.

Many children are misdiagnosed with learning disabilities when often times it's a vision related issue that goes undetected. Please discuss this with your optometrist. If they don't handle it, they should refer to someone/group who does.

I once had lunch with a friend of mine who is pediatric cardiologist. One of 6 doctors who can do surgery on a babies heart while still in the womb. I told him how much I envied him, saving lives, helping mothers etc.

Without hesitation he said: "Your job is way more important, what good is the life I save, if they can't SEE it to enjoy it"

As doctors we do what we do to help people in EVERY WAY we can, often sacrificing our own health, personal time with children, marriage, etc but then its the little things that make it all worth it!

At 75 years young, Dr. Tulman still sees patients a few days a week and continues to inspire us all.

He’s a proud yearly participant in the 10k Peachtree Road Race and remains the guiding force of our practice.
