Contact a speech/language pathologist if you have concerns about your child’s speech sound acquisition.

Great pronoun development visual!

Let's talk about Pronouns! Pronouns are words that can replace nouns- and are used frequently by typically developing toddlers. Difficulty understanding or using pronouns is often a sign of language delay or disorder, and this is one sign that is regularly missed by parents and doctors. Check out this chart that shows the typical age of mastery for each pronoun- if your child appears delayed or is confusing pronouns after the typical age of mastery, it might be a good idea to schedule an evaluation with a speech language pathologist!

Speech or Language?

Speech or Language?

"Oh you're a speech therapist? You help kids say 'R', right?" YES! Yes I do that and SO MUCH MORE! SLP stands for speech language pathologist, yet most people don't realize we focus on increasing language skills too! It's also important to know, a person does not need speech in order to have language! Find out the difference here 👇🏼👏🏼🙌🏼

Helpful information for parents. ~Modeling language~

Modeling Language- if you are a SLP or have a child in speech therapy, these are words you probably say or hear pretty often. Many parents think they are supporting language development when they test kids' vocabulary knowledge by asking "What is this?", when in fact this may have a negative impact. Children get tired of these quizzes (just as you would if someone did this to you!)- particularly when it's a question they have answered many times before- and will often shut down and not want to talk. It also limits their speech to just nouns and labeling- which is not a good thing because there is SO much more to language! Here are some examples for what you could say instead - when you see trucks! For more ideas of how you can model language, check out my routine series at www.mrsspeechiep.com/morning-routine

What exactly is autism? While the autism spectrum is HUGE, it is a constellation of symptoms that include: Language Differences, Social Differences, and Restrictive/Repetitive Behaviors. These are just some examples of what can fall under each category. One does not need to have all or even most of these symptoms to have autism, these are just some of the most common.
