The History of Veterans Day

Veterans Day is celebrated each year on November 11. Originally known as Armistice Day, it marked the end of World War I. On November 11, 1918, at 11 a.m., the guns fell silent, signaling the armistice between the Allied nations and Germany, effectively ending "the war to end all wars." In 1938, November 11 became a federal holiday to honor World War I veterans. However, following World War II and the Korean War, it was clear that veterans of all wars deserved recognition, so in 1954, the holiday was renamed Veterans Day.

Unlike Memorial Day, which honors those who have died in service, Veterans Day is dedicated to all who have served in the military—both in wartime and peacetime. This day allows us to thank those who stood ready to protect our nation, ensuring the safety and freedom of its people.
