Big congratulations to Maddie, Connor, Makayla, and Bri on completing the Methodologies of Instruction course and earning their Pennsylvania EMS Instructor certification!

They wrapped it up with final presentations today and did a great job. This is a big step, not just for them, but for our entire organization.

We’re proud to have them on our team and even more excited to see them step into the role of educating and shaping the next generation of EMS providers.

There’s been a lot of discussion recently about the EMS funding crisis. The reality is, it’s a problem we’re dealing with right here.

EMS is one of the only public safety services that isn’t funded like police or fire. Instead, we rely heavily on insurance reimbursement, and that system is built around one thing: transport.

If we take a patient to the hospital, we can bill for the service. If we provide care on scene and the patient doesn’t need to go to the hospital, there is often little or no reimbursement.

Think about that.

We respond to overdoses, diabetic emergencies, falls, and breathing problems. We stabilize patients. We keep people out of the hospital when it’s safe to do so. We do exactly what the system should want us to do. And in many of those cases, we’re not paid for it.

At the same time, we carry the full cost of readiness.

Ambulances staffed and ready 24 hours a day
Highly trained EMTs and paramedics
Advanced equipment and medications
All of the logistics and information systems need to run the agency.

All of that has to be in place before the call ever comes in. You don’t get to build an EMS system when someone dials 911. It has to already be there.

That readiness is what saves lives. But it’s also what creates the financial strain.

Warwick Community Ambulance is not funded by tax dollars. We rely on a combination of billing, subscriptions, donations, and community support to keep this system running.

We’re getting ready to launch our 2026–2027 subscription drive.

This program helps cover a portion of the cost of readiness, the people, equipment, and systems that are in place before the call ever happens.

When you receive your mailing, take a moment to return it or subscribe online. Your support directly helps us stay ready to respond at any time.

You may not need us today. But when you do, we need to be here.

Medic 2-1, Intermediate 2-11 and EMS Chief 2 on scene at a medical emergency early last week. Sometimes an extra paramedic on scene makes all the difference. By staffing our coverage area carefully, we ensure multiple paramedics are available when a call requires additional hands or a higher level of care.

Today our team completed driver training for several of our newer staff members. Christian Kegel, AEMT, who is also a certified Emergency Vehicle Driver Training (EVDT) instructor, worked through a hands on competency course with our new EMTs.

Safe ambulance operation is one of the most important responsibilities we have. Responding to emergencies is only helpful if we arrive safely and do not create additional risk for our patients, our crews, or the public. Training like this ensures that our team understands not just how to operate the vehicle, but how to do so with judgment, discipline, and professionalism.

We appreciate Christian taking the time to work with the team and continue building a culture of safe, responsible operations at Warwick.

We're often asked, why do we transport to a specific hospital? It comes down to two things: your choice and how sick or injured you are.

You ALWAYS have a voice in the decision. If you are alert and able to decide, you can request a hospital. We respect that. Patient autonomy matters.

At the same time, acuity matters too.

If you are injured in a traumatic accident, you need to be seen at a trauma center.
If you are showing signs of a large vessel occlusion stroke, you need to be seen at a hospital that can recognize it quickly and treat it immediately.

We try to keep people close to home whenever we can. We are not driving past hospitals just to drive farther. We are taking you to the hospital that makes the most sense for your condition and will give you the very best care.

The goal is simple. Get you to the right place, the first time.

In February, Warwick EMS was dispatched to 491 calls across our service area. Warwick Township and Lititz Borough accounted for the highest call volumes, followed by Manheim Township and Elizabeth Township. Falls and sick person calls made up the largest share of our volume, followed by breathing problems, chest pain, and unconscious person calls.

We transported patients primarily to LGH Penn Medicine, with 97 patients, and UPMC Lititz with 69 patients. Ephrata WellSpan received 30 patients, followed by Lancaster Penn State with 5, and single transports to Hershey Penn State, UPMC Harrisburg, and Good Samaritan.

Approximately 77 percent of our responses resulted in transport to a medical facility. Nationally, ambulance services typically transport between 70 and 85 percent of 911 calls. Our transport rate remains consistent with national standards and reflects appropriate system utilization and clinical decision making.

Our community impact remains just as important as our emergency response work. In February, we issued 69 CPR certifications, taught 3 Stop the Bleed classes, covered 1 community event, and performed one car seat safety check. We submitted our application for Pennsylvania’s Prepared for Pediatrics certification to further strengthen our pediatric readiness. Warwick EMS is also now serving as a Lancaster County car seat distribution site. Social workers will direct low-income families in and around Lititz to us for free car seats provided through Penn Medicine, and we will provide both the seat and installation instructions to ensure children travel safely.

Every call, every class, every interaction. That is how we serve this community.

The forecast models are currently predicting anywhere between zero and 196 inches of snow. It might rain. It might snow. It might do absolutely nothing. That is winter in Pennsylvania.

What we do know is that we will probably see at least some snow, and heavy snow makes shoveling harder than it looks. So before you head out there to prove something to your driveway, take a minute and look at the tips in this graphic. Lift with your legs, push when you can, take breaks, stay hydrated, and if you feel chest pain while shoveling, that is not something to tough out. Call 911.

We would much rather check on you early than meet you after you tried to power through it.
