February 7 is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, a time to recognize the disproportionate impact of HIV on Black communities and the importance of expanding access to education, prevention, testing and treatment.
Nationally, Black Americans accounted for 38 percent of new HIV diagnoses in 2023, despite representing only about 12 percent of the U.S. population. In South Carolina, the impact is even more pronounced, with Black residents accounting for approximately 63 percent of people living with diagnosed HIV. Despite effective prevention options, Black individuals represented only 15 percent of PrEP users nationwide in 2024.
At Little River Medical Center, we are committed to addressing these disparities through accessible, respectful care. All LRMC locations offer free walk in HIV screening. As a recipient of Ryan White funding, LRMC provides comprehensive care for people living with HIV, along with prevention services such as PrEP for those at increased risk.
Awareness matters. Access matters. Care matters.
