When someone walks into my clinic in pain, I don't just think about the injury in front of me. I start asking questions about longevity.
What do you want your body to be able to do in 10 years?
What activities matter most to you?
What kind of energy do you want to have each day?
We all have different goals, but one thing is consistent: We rely on our bodies to fulfill our mission in the world, whether that mission involves work, family, sport, or service.
As a physical therapist, I have the privilege of seeing patients over an extended period of time, giving us the opportunity to look beyond short-term pain relief and talk about something deeper: how to ensure a body that supports long-term living, goals, and aspirations.
The way I see it and explain it to my patients is in 'The 4 Buckets Of Longevity'. They are strength, flexibility, balance, and cardiovascular health. If we are adding to these buckets all the time, we are doing our body a favor for the long term.
