When her symptoms were dismissed, Corinne Torney trusted her instincts — and kept pushing for answers.

That persistence led to a diagnosis of multiple myeloma, a challenging blood cancer that affects the bone marrow and immune system. Corinne traveled to the world-renowned UAMS Myeloma Center here at the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute for specialized care, where expert teams provided aggressive treatment — including chemotherapy and two stem cell transplants — helping her live well beyond initial expectations.

“Since the pandemic, we’ve seen a concerning trend of women coming in less often for their screening,” said Dr. Lisa Bazett-Matabele, UAMS gynecologic oncologist.

Two simple tests offered by your gynecologist can prevent cervical cancer:
• Pap test: finds and treats precancerous changes before cancer develops
• HPV test: detects high-risk HPV infections linked to cervical cancer

Nearly all cervical cancers — about 99% — are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). That’s why HPV vaccination, recommended for children and young adults, along with regular screening, is so effective at preventing cervical cancer or catching it early.

Our Story

A center of excellence at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, the Cancer Institute is Arkansas’ only comprehensive cancer treatment and research facility. The institute’s staff of physicians, nurses, researchers and other health care professionals is dedicated to improving the health of all cancer patients, both from Arkansas and beyond. The institute was renamed in 2007 to honor the memory of the late Arkansas Lt. Gov. Winthrop P. Rockefeller, who died of a rare bone marrow disorder that can lead to leukemia. A lifelong Arkansan, Rockefeller was widely known for his dedication to community service, and he championed the cause of bone marrow donation awareness following his treatment. In summer 2010, the Cancer Institute celebrated the grand opening of its 12-story expansion. Filled with natural light, the expansion is an environment designed to promote comfort, convenience and collaboration. It not only adds much-needed space for current research and treatment programs, but also allows for growth of these programs in the future. UAMS has several social media policies and guidelines in place for our institution. To see a full list of guidelines and terms of use, go to http://uamshealth.com/socialmediaguidelines.
