February’s horse of the month is Blondie, our 22-year-old chestnut Quarter Horse mare!

Blondie did 38 lessons this month—the most of any horse. She’s a client and teacher favorite because she’s dependable, calm, and well-trained. We love our beautiful Blondie!

Thanks to her owners, Gretchen and Philip of Tailored Equine Training in Larkspur, CO, for entrusting her to our program.

One of the responsibilities of a volunteer horse leader with The Right Step, Inc. is tacking up a horse for a lesson.

Morgan Griffith explains the steps in order. Bookmark this so you can find it later.

1) Tack room: Look at the lesson sheet, get out the tack and the grooming bag.
2) Put the tack near the cross-ties.
3) Get the horse from their stall or paddock.
4) Groom: curry, hard brush, soft brush, and hooves.
5) Tack up: saddle pad, saddle, girth.

Games while riding a horse!? Yes. Our PATH certified adaptive riding instructors often play games with clients during the lessons.

Games help riders with following directions, listening, concentration, and communication skills, while increasing core strength, muscle tone, large motor skills, and small motor skills.

For example, a ball toss may improve trunk rotation or hand eye coordination. Or finding a colored toy can improve color recognition and motor planning.

Plus, our riders love playing games!

Share this reel so others learn about adaptive riding barns like The Right Step.
