Educating yourself on breastfeeding before your baby is born can reduce stress and anxiety. One of my favorite ways to spend time with clients is educating on what to expect, when to call if there’s trouble or difficulty, and tips that can help you be successful with breastfeeding.

Let’s talk about COLOSTRUM!
During your pregnancy, your body is building up colostrum for that first feed. Colostrum is densely packed with all the goods to coat baby’s tummy and lay the foundation for a healthy microbiome and immune system. Colostrum will look like a thick golden liquid. Studies show that babies who receive colostrum during those first days are more likely to have a healthy gut in adulthood.
During my experience as a postpartum nurse, a lot of moms felt discouraged by the amount of colostrum that would come out if they were pumping or hand expressing. A few drops is normal! An ounce is normal! Everyone will present with different amounts, so don’t be discouraged if you feel like it’s not enough. Ask questions, and don’t forget to ask for help.

You may feel really overwhelmed when you notice a drop in supply. Over your breastfeeding journey, there will be different stages where this is totally normal.
- after introducing solids
- around 6-7 months, when distractions during feeds are at an all time high
- when baby starts sleeping through the night
and more.
Increasing milk supply is best tackled by prevention and quick intervention!
When you noticed a drop in supply, what was the most helpful intervention to bring it back up?

Something I was asked most on the Postpartum Unit was "is this normal". On the second day, your baby will be eating more than they did on day one. This can be a very tiring process, so it's good to be informed and prepare for it!
