Ephesians 2:4-10

But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

Not of works, lest any man should boast.
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Step1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol — that our lives had become unmanageable.

When we realize our powerlessness we can then seek a source of power. Addiction is a hard thing to defeat especially if your relying purely on self will. I think Jesus might have been teaching the principle of the first step when He said deny thyself. He meant give up on your self as being the answer give up on self reliance. Understanding that self will is what got me in this mess in the first place.

Jesus is that source of power

In Matthew 28:19
Jesus had sent his disciples to preach the great commission. But before you do this He said I want you to wait until you received the promise until ye be endued with power on high Luke 24:49

Jesus knew they could not perform what he had commanded them to do on self reliance.

Give up on self and give it to Jesus

Luke 10:19
Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

Ephesians 3:20
Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
