Colorectal cancer isn’t just a concern for older adults. Young-onset colorectal cancer is often diagnosed at more advanced stages — sometimes because symptoms are overlooked or screening hasn’t started yet.

Changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, persistent abdominal pain, or ongoing fatigue shouldn’t be ignored — at any age.

If something doesn’t feel right, talk to your provider. Early attention to symptoms can make a difference.

Celebrating Licensed Clinical Social Workers Week

Our Licensed Clinical Social Workers serve patients both in the Clinic and through Home Health & Hospice, providing compassionate support that addresses the whole person — emotional, social, and practical needs alongside medical care. They help patients navigate mental health concerns, chronic illness, life transitions, complex medical decisions, and end-of-life journeys, while also connecting individuals and families with valuable community resources and support systems.

Their work brings guidance, advocacy, and comfort during some of life’s most challenging moments.

We are deeply grateful for the dedication and heart our LCSWs bring to the patients, families, and community we serve.

Fact: The goal of colorectal cancer screening isn’t just to find cancer early — it’s to prevent it from developing in the first place.

Most colorectal cancers begin as small, precancerous growths called polyps. These polyps can be detected during a colonoscopy — and often removed at the same time — stopping cancer before it starts.

Screening saves lives because it allows providers to identify and remove problems early, often before symptoms ever appear.

If you’re 45 or older, or have a family history or risk factors, talk with your provider about when you should begin screening.

Prevention is powerful. Don’t wait.

It’s National Nutrition Month — Let’s Talk Protein!
By Cassidy Crawford, MS, RD, LN, CHI

Protein is having a major moment. From popcorn to water, it seems like everything is being marketed as “high protein.” But how much do you actually need — and can you have too much?

Protein is one of the three macronutrients (along with carbohydrates and fat) and plays essential roles in the body. It supports muscle structure, hormone production, immune function, and helps stabilize blood sugar — keeping your energy levels steady instead of spiking and crashing.

You can find protein in:
✔️ Meat
✔️ Eggs & dairy
✔️ Beans
✔️ Nuts
✔️ Plant-based meat alternatives

If you’re not getting enough, your body may show signs like fatigue, brittle hair or nails, muscle weakness, slower recovery from illness, and mood swings.
So how much is enough?

For most adults, the evidence-based recommendation is 0.8–1.0 grams per kilogram of body weight per day (about 55–68 grams for a 150 lb adult).

While protein is important, more isn’t always better. Excess intake — especially long term — can put strain on the kidneys and liver and may crowd out other important nutrients like fiber.

The goal? Balance.
Stay within recommended ranges and consider speaking with a Registered Dietitian for personalized guidance.

In a world full of “protein everything,” remember: a well-rounded plate matters more than the hype.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month 💙

Did you know that regular screening can save lives? Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers when caught early.

At Livingston HealthCare, we’re dedicated to raising awareness and encouraging everyone to take action. If you’re 45 or older, or have a family history, talk to your healthcare provider about screening options. Early detection makes all the difference!

Livingston HealthCare is pleased to share that Dr. Mette Strand is providing primary care at the Shields Valley Clinic on the second Wednesday of every month.

Dr. Strand earned her medical degree from the University of Oslo in Norway and completed her Internal Medicine residency at Billings Clinic in Billings, Montana. She brings experience in rural medicine, hematology/oncology, and pulmonary care — along with a deep commitment to caring for the whole person.

Her philosophy? Treat each patient as an individual. Dr. Strand sees herself as a partner and “detective,” working closely with patients to explore their health questions and concerns while recognizing their physical, emotional, and social needs.

She is excited to serve the Shields Valley community and appreciates the close-knit spirit that makes rural living so special.

Your heart health matters every day—not just this month. ❤️

Take a moment to check in with yourself.
Have you scheduled that appointment you’ve been putting off?
Do you know your blood pressure, cholesterol, or blood sugar numbers?
Are you getting enough sleep, managing stress, or moving your body regularly?

Heart health isn’t about perfection. It’s about small, consistent choices that add up over time. A short walk. Choosing water instead of soda. Calling your provider with questions. Making time to rest. These simple steps can make a meaningful difference.

Livingston HealthCare is here to support you at every stage—whether you’re focused on prevention, managing a condition, or simply wanting to better understand your numbers.

Livingston HealthCare has returned to full operations following a recent cybersecurity incident. In response to the incident, Livingston HealthCare, out of an abundance of caution, removed certain systems from its network for a thorough and comprehensive review. At this time, these systems have been brought back online and all network systems, phone lines, and patient services are functioning normally.

While our investigation into the full extent of the incident remains ongoing, at this time, we have no indication that any personal or protected health information was accessed or acquired as a result of this incident.

“We are grateful for the patience and understanding shown by our patients, employees, and community during this time,” said Bruce Whitfield, CEO.
