The holidays don’t pause healthcare, and our teams are ready around the clock to care for our community. While many are celebrating with loved ones, staff across Livingston HealthCare are here around the clock to care for our community. 🎄❄️

Today, we want to recognize our Emergency Department, who are often the first point of care for winter injuries, illnesses, and unexpected emergencies. Their ability to respond quickly, work under pressure, and support patients during some of their most stressful moments is vital—especially this time of year.

We’re deeply grateful to all departments working through the holidays, and especially to our ED team for the critical role they play in keeping our community safe and cared for. Thank you for your dedication, teamwork, and compassion.

Stay Steady This Winter: Balance & Fall Prevention ❄️
Information presented by LHC Physical Therapist, Miles Schneeman, PT, DPT, CSC

Icy sidewalks and snowy paths can make winter walking challenging, but a few practical steps can help reduce your risk of slipping and falling.

Try these simple tips to stay steady:
✔️ Practice standing on one leg near a counter or sturdy chair
✔️ Add heel-to-toe walking or side steps to improve balance
✔️ Build leg strength with gentle squats or seated leg lifts
✔️ Use ski poles or trekking poles for extra support outdoors
✔️ Wear supportive shoes with good traction or use slip-on shoe traction devices for icy conditions
✔️ Take smaller steps and walk like a “penguin”— slow and deliberate steps—on slick surfaces

Working on balance and strength now can help keep you moving safely all winter long. If you’re worried about stability or falls, talk with your provider or a physical therapist about exercises and supports that are right for you.

Snow and ice can make winter walking risky, but a few simple precautions can help keep you safe outdoors:

• Choose proper footwear: Wear boots with low heels and deep rubber treads. Avoid slick or worn soles.
• Use traction aids: Add spikeless grippers or ice-tip spikes to shoes or canes for better grip on icy surfaces.
• Walk smart: Take short, shuffling steps and keep your feet flat. A slight “penguin” walk can help maintain balance.
• Keep paths clear: Shovel regularly and use salt, sand, or kitty litter on walkways and driveways.
• Use support: Hold handrails on stairs and keep your hands free for balance—avoid walking with hands in pockets.
• Stay alert: Don’t rush. Give yourself extra time and watch for hidden ice. Test slippery spots with your toe first.
• Dress smart: Wear gloves to keep hands warm and available for balance. Layer clothing to stay warm without limiting movement.
• Stay home when needed: During severe weather, consider staying indoors or arranging deliveries for essentials.
• Check medications: Some prescriptions can affect balance or cause dizziness—talk with your provider if you’re unsure.
• Stay connected: Carry a phone and let someone know your plans before heading out.

A little planning goes a long way toward preventing winter slips and falls. Stay safe out there!

Winter driving in Montana can be unpredictable, and a little preparation can go a long way toward keeping you and your loved ones safe. ❄️🚗

Before heading out, make sure your vehicle is ready for winter conditions and stocked with essentials in case of delays or emergencies. Consider keeping items like a flashlight, extra blankets and warm clothing, nonperishable food and water, candles or emergency lights, and a phone charger in your car. Families traveling with infants should also pack baby formula, diapers, and other necessary supplies.

Planning ahead helps reduce stress and keeps you prepared if weather or road conditions change unexpectedly. Stay safe, slow down, and give yourself extra time when traveling this winter.

Food Safety After a Power Outage ⚠️
(Information sourced from the CDC)

During a power outage:
• Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed
• Food will stay safe for:
– Up to 4 hours in a refrigerator
– Up to 48 hours in a full freezer
– Up to 24 hours in a half-full freezer
• If the outage lasts more than 4 hours and you have ice or a cooler, move perishable foods to a cooler and keep them at 40°F or below

After power is restored:
• Never taste food to determine if it’s safe — when in doubt, throw it out
• Discard perishable foods (meat, fish, eggs, milk, cut fruits and vegetables, leftovers) that were without power or a cold source for 4 hours or more
• Throw out any food with an unusual smell, color, or texture
• If you have a refrigerator thermometer, make sure food is at 40°F or below
• Check food stored in coolers — discard anything above 40°F or fully thawed
• Frozen food that still has ice crystals or is 40°F or below can be safely refrozen or cooked

Taking a few precautions now can help protect you and your family from foodborne illness. Stay safe and take care.
