March is Brain Injury Awareness Month 🧠💚

Brain injury is more common than many people think. Millions of individuals in the U.S. are living with the lasting effects of a brain injury and every story looks different.

You may hear the terms TBI and ABI used. Here’s the difference:

🔹 Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
Caused by an external force
Examples: falls, car accidents, sports injuries, assaults

🔹 Acquired Brain Injury (ABI)
Any brain injury that occurs after birth that is not congenital or degenerative
This includes TBI, but also injuries such as stroke, anoxia, infection, or tumor

Rehab plays a critical role in helping individuals:
🔹 Rebuild functional skills
🔹 Improve safety and awareness
🔹 Strengthen cognitive processing
🔹 Increase independence in daily life
🔹 Support long-term quality of life

If you or someone you love is navigating life after brain injury, know this: progress is possible, even when it looks different than before.

March is Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month 🧡

Multiple Sclerosis is a neurological condition that affects the central nervous system and can impact movement, sensation, vision, cognition, and fatigue levels.
No two MS journeys look the same, which is why individualized, evidence-based rehab is so important.

At TRP, therapy is focused on:
🔹 Improving strength & mobility
🔹 Managing fatigue and energy conservation
🔹 Enhancing balance & coordination
🔹 Supporting cognition & daily routines
🔹 Maintaining independence and quality of life

🧠 Why it matters:
Neurorehabilitation can help individuals with MS stay active, adapt to changes & continue doing the things that matter most at every stage of their journey.

To those living with MS, their families, and their care partners we see you, we support you, and we’re here to help you keep moving forward.

Spring is on the horizon & Katie is getting ready 🌷

After a severe car accident & multiple fractures, she’s putting in the work to get back to what she loves most: gardening + feeling confident in her own yard.

In today’s session, Katie is in a half-kneeling position on an Airex pad, leaning forward to “pull weeds” using suctioned Squiggs placed on a wedge. In between Squiggs are weighted beanbags she has to retrieve & sort to the side.

🌼 What are we working on:
🔹 Single-leg stability & weight shifting
🔹 Hip mobility & strength
🔹 Dynamic balance on a compliant surface
🔹Functional reach
🔹Grip strength
🔹Proximal stability & core engagement

🧠 Why are we doing it:
Gardening requires getting up and down from the ground, leaning, reaching & working on uneven surfaces.

Practicing these movements in a controlled way helps Katie build the strength, balance & confidence she needs to safely return to her yard this spring.

We love preparing for real-life goals & growth. 🌱
Warmer weather, we’re ready for you!

The closing ceremony may be over… but the winter games are still happening at TRP. 🥇❄️

Two of our CSR athletes took on simulated winter sports to challenge balance, coordination & dual-task performance.

⛷️ Cross-country skiing

🔹 Coordinated UE + LE movement
🔹 Symmetrical weight shifting
🔹 Overall strength & endurance

🏒 Hockey passing
➡️Controlled puck exchanges while maintaining stance & timing
🔹 Visual tracking
🔹 Motor planning & UE engagement
🔹 Dynamic balance

🏂 Snowboarding on the slip trainer

Advancing neurorehabilitation through research and collaboration 📚🧠

Our PT Jess represented TRP at the APTA Conference, partnering with University of Michigan–Flint at the iKNOW Project table to share their work titled:

“Getting Stronger: Improving Resistance Training for Parkinson Disease through Knowledge Translation.”

This project focuses on translating current evidence into real-world clinical practice to optimize strength training for individuals with Parkinson disease, ensuring that what we do in the clinic reflects what research shows is most effective.

Through collaborations like iKNOW, our team is able to
🔹 Bridge the gap between research & daily treatment
🔹 Contribute clinical insight to ongoing studies
🔹 Bring evidence directly back to the clients we serve

Proud to see our clinicians actively shaping the future of neurologic rehabilitation while continuing to raise the standard of care. 👏

Hope starts here and grows through education, partnership, and purpose. 💡

Different ways to train stairs after stroke ⬆️⬇️

Drew is taking stair training beyond simple up and down to build real strength, control & confidence for daily life.

🧠 Variation 1: Step stance + BlazePod taps
Affected leg stabilizing

✅ Single-leg stability
✅ Knee drive & step-up power
✅ Reaction time & motor planning

🧠 Variation 2: Stair negotiation
✅Practicing controlled ascent & descent
✅Focus on foot placement, timing & balance

🧠 Variation 3: Eccentric control challenge
Descending with the unaffected leg leading
➡️ Forces the affected leg to control the lowering phase

✅ Functional single-leg mini squats
✅ Quad strength & joint control
✅ Fall-risk reduction

💡 Why it matters
Stairs require power, coordination, and eccentric control. Training them in multiple ways prepares Drew for real-world environments at home and in the community.

Building strength where it counts. 👏

Standing for what she loves ❤️

KJ is working on sit-to-stand transitions and prolonged standing from her wheelchair with skilled assistance at the hips, building the strength & postural control needed for functional independence.

🔹 Sit to stand practice
✅ LE strength
✅ Weight shifting & midline control
✅ Transfer mechanics

🔹 Prolonged supported standing
✅ Postural endurance
✅ Balance training
✅ Confidence outside the chair

🔹 Hands off for heart hands
✅ Letting go of the rails while standing
✅ Static balance
✅ Core activation

💡 Why it matters
Standing tolerance supports transfers, ADLs, and participation in daily routines. Moments like this turn hard work into meaningful progress.

Working hard, feeling the love & building independence. ❤️

Exciting staffing update! 🚨

Many of you may recognize this friendly face… meet our new Physical Therapist Assistant, Josie Warchol! 👋

🎓After earning her degree from Baker College, Josie is officially joining our Clinton Township team as a therapist. She brings with her over three years of dedication, compassion & meaningful connection with our clients in her previous role as a rehab technician.

Josie is no stranger to the rehab world. Before working as a tech, she experienced the other side of therapy as a TRP patient herself & quickly fell in love with the environment & the people. Watching our incredible clinicians help her dad navigate recovery after a severe stroke sealed the deal & sparked her passion to pursue a career helping others regain function and, most importantly, their independence.

🧠We have no doubt Josie will continue to grow & shine in her new role, especially within our wellness programs, one punch at a time in Rock Steady Boxing. She is especially excited to apply her skills with the geriatric population, particularly individuals living with Parkinson’s.

Welcome to the team (again), Josie! We cannot wait to watch you step into this new role and bring the same energy and heart you’ve shown throughout your time at TRP. ❤️

If you see Josie around the clinic, be sure to congratulate her on her new title and role! 👏

As we enter the second month of 2026, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the impact 2025 had across our clinics.

Behind every number was a person.
A family.
A goal that mattered.

This past year, we had the privilege of serving individuals navigating stroke, spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s disease, MS, TBI, chronic pain, oncology recovery, and more. Each diagnosis came with unique challenges and meaningful progress.

Reflection is not just about looking back.
It is about asking how we can continue to raise the standard, push outcomes further, and serve our community even better in the year ahead.

If 2026 is the year you or someone you love needs support with strength, balance, speech, mobility, or independence, we are here.

Specialized. Evidence based. Personalized.

Hope starts here!
