For more than a century, R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Homes has faithfully served families in the Detroit area. What began as a small family business in 1910 has grown into a trusted provider of funeral and cremation services across multiple communities. Here is a look back at the history of of our funeral home.
Part 1: In 1910, Robert G. Harris established R.G. Harris Funeral Home in the Haste Mansion at Trumbull and Hancock. He began serving the families of Detroit with the help of his father, George R. Harris, who at the time was a manager with the Detroit Free Press. Four years later, George joined his son full time and the firm became known as the R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Home. During these early years, Robert’s wife Flora also obtained her funeral director’s license, making her one of the first women in Michigan to do so.
As the business grew into one of the largest single-location funeral homes in Detroit, it became necessary to move in the 1930s to Cass Avenue at Canfield. To provide more convenience for families, the Harris family expanded further, opening the Harper Avenue location in 1941 for East Detroit families. By 1951, another facility was built on McNichols Avenue to serve the growing needs of Northwest Detroit.
