The holidays can stir up deep emotions after a loss. If you or someone you love is grieving this Thanksgiving, we know how difficult it can be during a time meant for togetherness. We hope you’re able to find small moments of comfort and peace.

And if you know someone who’s missing a loved one this Thanksgiving, take a moment to reach out. A simple call, visit, or kind message can mean more than you know. Sometimes the smallest gestures remind us that we’re not alone.

Part 2 of our history!

After the passing of Robert G. Harris in 1966, his son Thomas L. Harris and son-in-law Clarence Rost continued the family’s tradition of service. During this time of leadership transition, the firm expanded to serve even more communities, opening a Livonia location in 1964 and a Garden City location in 1969 to meet the needs of Western Wayne County families.

Following the retirements of Thomas Harris and Clarence Rost, ownership passed to Thomas F. Rost, grandson of the founder. Today, the funeral home still carries forward the Harris family tradition of helping those honor and remember their loved ones.

For more than a century, R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Homes has faithfully served families in the Detroit area. What began as a small family business in 1910 has grown into a trusted provider of funeral and cremation services across multiple communities. Here is a look back at the history of of our funeral home.

Part 1: In 1910, Robert G. Harris established R.G. Harris Funeral Home in the Haste Mansion at Trumbull and Hancock. He began serving the families of Detroit with the help of his father, George R. Harris, who at the time was a manager with the Detroit Free Press. Four years later, George joined his son full time and the firm became known as the R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Home. During these early years, Robert’s wife Flora also obtained her funeral director’s license, making her one of the first women in Michigan to do so.

As the business grew into one of the largest single-location funeral homes in Detroit, it became necessary to move in the 1930s to Cass Avenue at Canfield. To provide more convenience for families, the Harris family expanded further, opening the Harper Avenue location in 1941 for East Detroit families. By 1951, another facility was built on McNichols Avenue to serve the growing needs of Northwest Detroit.

Stay tuned for part 2!
