On February 11, we recognize World Day of the Sick— a time to prayerfully remember all who are sick and suffering, and all who care for them. Initiated by Pope John Paul II and coinciding with the commemoration of Our Lady of Lourdes, this day is a reminder for us serving in Catholic health care of the importance of the sacred mission we are called to do.

In his message for this year’s World Day of the Sick, Pope Leo XIV invites us to reflect in a special way. Read his full message: https://bit.ly/4kvjeeH

58-year-old Lourdes Nicholls has always lived an active lifestyle. A vegetarian who rarely got sick, Lourdes was concerned when she returned home with extreme tightness in her chest following a rare dust storm on May 16, 2025. After an evaluation, doctors determined she had experienced a heart attack as a result of a Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD). SCAD is a serious, often life-threatening emergency where a tear forms in a coronary artery wall. It frequently affects young, healthy women.

As part of her recovery, her cardiologist recommended physical therapy. Lourdes turned to MacNeal's Cardiac Rehab. "When I first started, I was nervous. I was the youngest person there by at least 20 years," Lourdes explained. In the end, she built a community and lasting friendships with her fellow patients and staff.

Lourdes graduated from the cardiac rehab program in October 2025 after 36 sessions. "I didn't want to leave. I wanted to stay because of the wonderful staff and other patients. Everyone was always so encouraging and made you feel normal even when you didn't feel that way inside."

Since completing her program, Lourdes is dedicated to raising awareness about SCAD. She has connected with other survivors and is creating a SCAD support group.

Congratulations, Ellen!

Ellen Lain, RN, a member of the surgical intensive care team, was recently recognized with a DAISY Award for her extraordinary compassion.

A patient and her family described how Ellen’s presence, skill and empathy brought comfort during one of their most vulnerable moments. They shared that she not only cared for the patient but supported the family with steady reassurance and genuine compassion when it mattered most.

Their words say it all: “Ellen has made a profound difference in my life and my family’s life. I can think of no one more deserving.”

Thank you, Ellen, for embodying the very best of compassionate health care and for making such a meaningful impact on those you serve.

We're proud to share our feature in U.S. News and World Report highlighting our systemwide approach to community health. The article offers a snapshot of how we’re integrating clinical and social care to improve the well-being of those we serve.

“As a not-for-profit health system, we make investments to bring new services, treatments, technologies and facilities to grow but also to be able to give back and ensure that people have access to the type of care they need,” Dan Roth, MD, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Trinity Health.
