March is national Social Workers month. It’s is also women’s history month and my birthday month and the first month of Spring. In honor of all of the glorious things about March, I would like to proudly state that as a Social Worker my highest calling is to advocate and seek justice with people that have been harmed by systems of oppression. As a woman and a therapist my strength is in nurturing, seeing and knowing people deeply, which helps me enhance belonging with those around me. Some of these are funny and some are very real. All of them are things that resonate deeply with me. In honor of ADHD awareness month I want to share a bit about my story. I was first diagnosed when I was in 1st grade. At the time there really wasn’t a lot of options for treatments other than medication. My parents tried me on meds for a few years. It helped the teachers be less irritated by my behavior but I don’t remember much else. From 5th grade on my mom helped me cobble together coping techniques and strategies as best she could and helped me learn to learn with my brain. I’ve had periods where meds helped or felt necessary and periods when they didn’t. It’s all a learning experience for me. Now I have my own neurospicy kiddos and helping them learn to learn has been tough and beautiful. It’s striking how many more tools are available for me as a parent now than what my mom had. My deepest hope is that we can continue to decrease the stigma and make strategies for ADHDers to thrive more and more accessible. So, happy ADHD month to all my neurospicy peeps and happy awareness month to all of our allies and support people!!
