This little cutie used to wake me up 3 - 4 times a night, was frequently fussy for days on end and had significant digestive and breathing problems. Being a new mom, I followed along with doctor's orders... 5 rounds of antibiotics and other medications over 9 months and I still had no definitive diagnosis for him. He had uncontrollable, spastic coughing that sounded like he was choking, and I could hear fluid rumbling in his lungs. Once again, I found myself at the doctor's office. This time i was told that he has asthma and needed steroids, a nebulizer, and inhalers. I asked how long he would need this, and I was told "Probably for the rest of his life"
All I had to say was- Not my child! I took the prescriptions, filled them but held them aside for one night. It took some brainstorming to think through all that had happened. My son's doctor had never mentioned allergies to me, or that they could have such a huge imapct on his breathing and health. I made the decision to remove all dairy from his diet. Within three days, the horrific cough that had plagued Eli for 9 months was 80% alleviated. No medications- Within 60 days ALL of his health problems were 100% gone!
I urge everyone with kids to think outside the box and outside the prescription bottle. Had I followed through with the doctor's orders, I may very well have a child with asthma, that needs constant breathing treatments and therapies. Instead, by looking into the cause of his health problems, I now have a medication free, vibrant, healthy, happy 7 year old son!
I don't claim to have all of the answers, but I can say it's worthwhile to keep an open mind, do your own research, and be an advocate for your children. Many times, with our own pain or health problems, we're happy to pop a pill. I'm thankful for the education I received in chiropractic school, as it provided great insight on looking for and treating the cause of disease instead of covering it up with medication. There's defintely a time and place for medications, but never lose sight of the possible causes and prevention of the problem!
