🤓📚 Did you know?!? 🤯 Teaching more "labels," or what things are called, seems like a logical first step in helping a late talker get started. You may even be tempted to use pictures or flashcards to help. But research supports teaching what's called "functional language," or useful words that DO things and comment on our environments first and foremost! And doing that in "real life" scenarios! Try commenting on what you're DOING instead of what you're doing it WITH next time you're making a recipe, building a tower, or taking a walk with your late talker. See what happens! 🤗

The internet is full of lots of information (and misinformation! 🥴) We stay up on the most current best practices so you don't have to! If you have questions about what to prioritize to help your late talker at home, you can always ask a licensed SLP for help! 🤩🙋‍♀️

Have you ever wanted to ask a speech therapist a question? Like, "How many words should a 2 year old say?" Or, "What's that hangy-ball thing in the back of my throat?" Or "Do you think my child might need a speech evaluation?" Well the speech therapist is IN! Today 1/27 (Saturday) from 9am-12pm, swing by and say hi!

Inside the Hocking Hills Bagel Company at 40 North Market Street, Logan, OH (that used to be a bank!) There is a little Spot-- Speech on the Spot's "Safe Spot," that is ready to use for scheduled group play, all-abilities story time with extra support for tablet talker users, caregiver education, one-on-one for kids whose mobility or medical equipment needs don't suit the bus, and more!

Yes, I like the alliteration. And the pun.

NOW. I hate wasted space and equipment, so im doing an experiment. 🔬👩‍🔬

When the Safe Spot is NOT being used for a scheduled activity, I would like to leave the door OPEN for kids to get their sensory needs met, get the sillies out, while their grown ups have some coffee or a sandwich, or just read their book, etc. I trust that this amazing little community of ours can put things back where they belong, not break things, and not take things home in little pockets. Oh, and no shoes. :) I also trust that if any of these things accidentally happen, you can call or text the posted number immediately, or tell someone at the counter.

IF the space is not respected, the door will have to be CLOSED unless you have purchased a ticket to a scheduled event. I don't want to do that!

All I ask in return is that you use the QR code by the door for a suggested venmo/paypal/zelle to Speech on the Spot SE Ohio of $4 per kiddo. Chill, no one's hunting you down if you don't. But it helps keep the Safe a nice place we can all enjoy, and helps kids in our community to get speech therapy when they need it 💛

I look forward to "Office Hours" today! My "tiny house" loving heart has had so much fun with this project and I can't wait to see it being enjoyed!

What is speech therapy "supposed to" look like? 🙊I hope you don't think me less "professional" if you catch me in a sweatshirt and muddy boots -- I was probably jumping in mud puddles with a 5 year old who's learning the difference between "jump," "jumping" and "jumped." Or maybe I was collecting rocks with a 3 year old still learning to combine words together into phrases, like, "I want more!" Or I could have been sitting under a pile of balls, ready to "pop" up at the command of a child still learning to close his lips all the way to make "p."

Sure, I could put on a blazer and pick out some worksheets to color in.

But.....why?? 🤔

Hard-working parents can have an even harder time taking their kiddos to therapy during "normal" office hours! Not all daycares or babysitters can drive kids to Speech when they have other little ones to care for too. With their Guardian's permission, Speech Bus can pull right up to the babysitter's door!
