Akers-James Funeral Home

Akers-James Funeral Home Since our founding, we have been committed to treating each family who comes to us as our own. Our funeral home is a family owned and operated business.

We are large enough to give our families the same service as the largest funeral homes around, yet we are small enough that each family gets the level of attention and care they deserve. Our family opened the doors of the funeral home years ago. Our reputation for providing the highest quality of service grew, and today we are privileged to serve hundreds of area families each year. In recent years, we’ve gathered together a staff of highly-qualified and deeply caring individuals to assist us in continuing the funeral home’s mission of providing excellence in service to families in their time of need. Each of the staff members at James Funeral Home is committed to providing your family with the finest in personal care. In fact, for years, it’s been comforting for area families to know that we are available to help at any time of the day or night. When a loved one dies, all you need to do is make one phone call. From that moment on, we’ll take on the responsibilities of the physical care of your loved one, and the emotional care of those left behind. Whenever we’re faced with difficulties, we find comfort in those we know and trust. People we can count on to do their very best to help us. This is especially true when a loved one has died. If, at this very moment, this is your experience, please know the members of our professional staff are your friends and your neighbors. Each of them cares deeply about the people living in our community, and will become your ally during this time…and long after. We know there are other funeral homes in the area to choose from. But we also know that families who turn to us during a time of loss, or for pre-arrangement services experience our very high standards of service. We offer professional guidance and personal and specialized attention before, during and after the loss of a loved one. Dorothy Mae Frye (maiden - Moore)

September 22, 1934 - October 27, 2025

Dorothy Mae Frye, 91, of Logan, West Virginia, departed this life peacefully for her heavenly home after an extended illness on October 27, 2025. Born on September 22, 1934, in Louisa, Kentucky, she was the daughter of Edith Marie York and Giles Howard Moore.

Dorothy grew up in Louisa before moving to Logan during high school, where fate introduced her to her high school sweetheart, Charles Frye. After graduating high school, the two married and headed off to Jacksonville, Florida while Charles served in the Navy, before eventually returning home to Logan to raise their three daughters. Trina, Tammy, and Terri, in Justice Addition.

Dorothy was a homemaker for many years and later worked as a bookkeeper for Sears and as an administrative assistant in her son-in-law’s medical practice. Organized, sharp, and always dependable, she could keep both numbers and people in line without ever raising her voice, though she could give the look when needed.

She loved her garden, sunny days, and being outdoors (rainy days were not on her list of favorites). Her heart was especially soft for cats. She cared for more of them than anyone could count, and each one was spoiled in its own way. Dorothy loved shopping trips, “pickin’ in the park,” and cooking up big family meals whenever the kids and grandkids came to visit. She never forgot a birthday, was an expert at bragging about her grandkids, and was a devoted mom, grandma, and “cat mother” to the very end.

She’ll be remembered for her independence, her love of biscotti and peppermint patties, and her steady, no-nonsense kindness that made everyone feel taken care of.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Frye; mother, Edith York Wright; father, Giles Howard Moore; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Dorothy is survived by her daughters Trina Chirico Evans of Somerset, KY, Tamra Thavaradhara (Pathom) of Harker Heights, TX, and Terri Frye (Darin Markus) of East Brunswick, NJ; grandchildren Frank Chirico (Kristein) of Huddy, KY, Joshua Chirico (Audra) of Chapmanville, WV, Justin Chirico of Chapmanville, WV, Ryan (Darshana) Thavaradhara of Buda, TX; Lorcan Markus of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, Ciara Markus of East Brunswick, NJ, Keow (Mike) Essig of Fairfax, VA and Cookie Thavaradhara of Harker Heights, TX; great-grandchildren Natalie Chirico of Chapmanville, WV, Milani and Rossi Chirico of Huddy, KY, and Dougie, Ben and Jack Essig of Fairfax, VA.

Visitation will be at 12 pm on Saturday, November 1, 2025 at Akers James Funeral Home in Aracoma, WV with the funeral service to follow at 1 pm. Burial to follow at Highland Memorial Gardens.

Martha E. Daniel

Longtime English Teacher and Beloved Member of the Logan Community(Logan, West Virginia)

Joan Elaine Boyd

Joan Elaine Baker Boyd, 78, of Manakin Sabot, Virginia March 25, 1947 - October 3, 2025

“Your spirit here eternally I see your halo shine. You fly into my dreams and when I am asleep I feel your wings brush against my face wiping away the tears I shed.”

Amidst the tears, we can only celebrate the beautiful life of Joan Baker Boyd as she was the most extraordinary gift to everyone who knew her, especially her children and family. There aren’t enough words to describe a life that so fully embodied the truest meaning of how to love.

Joan’s grace, selfless compassion, intelligence and sassy sense of humor will be forever missed but always remembered fondly. She will be cherished for her generous heart and sincere kindness for others…always waiting behind her bright blue eyes and mischievous grin.

We will stay close to her when we see a hummingbird, smell a rose or hear one of her many cute Southern sayings in our head for no reason at all.

She loved the sunshine, chocolate, music of all kinds (but especially from the ‘50s and ‘60s), her kids, her grand-puppies and family the most. She loved so much about this life.

Born on a snowy Tuesday morning on March 25th, 1947 in Logan, West Virginia to her parents Samuel Paul Baker and Rosa Etta Jacobs Baker, Joan and her family settled in Whitman, WV, off Whitman Creek Road as her childhood home.

Joan was the youngest of eight children and preceded in death by her sisters - Dorothy (Dot) Baker Meade, Pauline Baker Tomblin and Hazel Baker Helphinstine, and brothers- Eddie Baker, Jack Baker, Jim Baker and Homer Baker.

She often spoke of her fond memories of her big family growing up. She recounted how they always celebrated the holidays together, her mom’s vegetable gardens and phenomenal cooking and baking. Some of her favorite childhood memories were of playing in the creek or riding her bike with her brother, nephew and friends.

Joan was a 1965 graduate of Logan High School and a proud Wildcat alumna who managed her class’ Facebook group for several years. She loved reconnecting with her classmates and attending their reunions.

She was the first in her family to earn her college degree in Library Science with a Bachelors and teaching certification from West Virginia University after transferring from Concord College. She worked through college in the university library where she met her first husband, Gary L. Clower, and lived in Morgantown while he finished his degree in Landscape Architecture in 1971.

She moved to Brunswick, Ohio after his graduation where both her daughter, Jody, and son, John, were born in Medina, Ohio.

She always said her goal in life, all she ever wanted- was to be a mother. And if that’s the truth, she more than excelled. She was the biggest fan and cheerleader a kid could ever have, always encouraging you to go after your dreams, to keep working hard and to never give up. She poured every ounce of her energy and spirit into people she loved and believed in.

Joan lived in several different states and towns over the years. Brunswick, Ohio, Hilton Head, South Carolina, Manakin Sabot, Virginia, Pfafftown, North Carolina and Manakin Sabot, Virginia once more.

In 1983, Joan married her second husband, Charles David Boyd, Sr. where she also gained a stepson, Charles D. Boyd, Jr. The family then relocated to Charles’ hometown of Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 1984 to a home in the Grandview neighborhood of Pfafftown.

As her children progressed through middle and high school, she worked in several office managerial and accounting positions in the Winston-Salem area. She worked at I.L. Long Construction and Leinbach Machinery and then for many years in the family’s construction business.

In February 1989, her childhood home in Whitman, West Virginia where her mother, Rosa Etta Baker, lived was destroyed by fire so all of the family’s heirlooms and photos were sadly lost.

Joan was an active member of Faith United Methodist Church in Rural Hall, North Carolina and teacher of the children’s choir for 15 years once her two own children left the nest. Her love of children carried through her entire life.

She and her husband, Charles, were also responsible for constructing the current church building at Faith United Methodist Church in 1995.

She was well known for her love of baking homemade pound cakes for friends, family and church bake sales - sometimes cranking out 6 or more different kinds in a day.

In 2009, her husband passed and so in 2017, she relocated to Manakin Sabot, Virginia again to be closer to her children.

She is survived by her adoring and devoted children - daughter, Jody Lynn Clower Rotman, her son, John Grove Clower V, her son-in-law, Frank Lewis Rotman, all of Manakin Sabot, Virginia as well as her grand-puppies, Evie and Nola, and her stepson, Charles David Boyd, Jr. of Indian Harbour Beach, Florida. Many cousins, nieces and nephews survive her as well.

Visitation with family will be held at James Funeral Home in Logan, West Virginia at 11 am on Tuesday, October 7, 2025 with a dedication at Highland Memory Gardens at 1 pm.

Donations to the Alzheimer’s Association would be appreciated. It’s a heartbreaking illness and more people need to be made aware of the negative after-effects of general anesthesia in the senior population.

As Joan would always sign her cards- “Love, Luck, Laughter”

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 19, 2025 at Akers-James Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery at Pecks Mill. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, September 18, 2025, also at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations can be made to the Hungry Lamb Food Pantry or the Presbyterian Church Blessing Box.

One of her favorites poems was:

When I am gone, just release me, let me go so I can move into my Lord’s home.

You mustn’t tie me down with your tears, let’s be happy that we had so many years.

I gave you my love, you can only guess how much you have given me in happiness.

I thank you for the love you each have shown, but now it’s time I traveled on alone.

So grieve for me awhile, if grieve you must, then let your grief be comforted with trust.

It’s only for a while that we must part, so bless the memories within your heart.

And then, when you come this way alone, I’ll greet you with a smile and a “Welcome home”.

Our Story

Our funeral home is a family owned and operated business. We are large enough to give our families the same service as the largest funeral homes around, yet we are small enough that each family gets the level of attention and care they deserve. Our family opened the doors of the funeral home years ago. Our reputation for providing the highest quality of service grew, and today we are privileged to serve hundreds of area families each year. In recent years, we’ve gathered together a staff of highly-qualified and deeply caring individuals to assist us in continuing the funeral home’s mission of providing excellence in service to families in their time of need. Each of the staff members at Akers-James Funeral Home is committed to providing your family with the finest in personal care. Our reputation for honesty and integrity is very well-known, and it is our most valuable asset. We hope you will turn to us for compassionate care and impeccable service. Our pledge is to honor your loved one and family with dignity, respect and personal attention to every detail. Call us today at (304) 752-4550 to explore the wide variety of choices available to you and your family. Or if you’d rather, and if your need isn’t immediate, send us an email.
