November is Stomach Cancer Awareness Month—also called Gastric Cancer Awareness Month—a time to raise public awareness about the disease, its symptoms, risk factors, and the importance of early detection and research. Gastric cancer is the fifth most common cancer in the world, and it kills more than 700,000 people each year.

Risk Factors: Several factors can increase the likelihood of developing stomach cancer: Family history of stomach cancer; long-term stomach inflammation (gastritis); infection with H. pylori bacteria; smoking; diets high in salted, smoked, or pickled foods; previous stomach surgery; and certain genetic conditions.

Common Symptoms to Watch For:

Stomach cancer can be difficult to detect early, but some signs may include:

🔹 Persistent indigestion or heartburn
🔹 Unexplained weight loss
🔹 Ongoing nausea or vomiting
🔹 Feeling full after eating only a small amount
🔹 Stomach pain or discomfort
🔹 Loss of appetite
🔹 Fatigue

Epilepsy Awareness Month in November is a yearly event that educates people about epilepsy’s causes and symptoms. One in 26 individuals will be diagnosed with epilepsy at some point in their lives. Epilepsy is among the least understood neurological diseases, yet it is the fourth most common.

Unfortunately, epilepsy has a long history of misunderstanding and stigma. Evidence of individuals suffering from epilepsy in ancient times often attributed it to spiritual or demonic possession. One of the goals of National Epilepsy Awareness Month is to separate the disease from its historical and false reputations.

Sharing your story and supporting others are powerful ways to advocate for awareness, better treatments, and ultimately, a cure. With more voices, we can bring hope to those living with the disease.

Making the presentation—shown at left—was Sharon K. Jeffrey, Behavioral Health Consultant & Professional Counselor.

Nominated anonymously, a colleague from Mountain Laurel shared: "Hannah has become one of the most valued assets in this agency. She was kind of a ‘hidden gem’ until everyone started recognizing her for her many jobs, tasks, and abilities—not only the work she does, but the work she willingly volunteers to take on.
