MBS Imaging

MBS Imaging Chicagoland's mobile diagnostic dysphagia solution providing both FEES and MBSS/VFSS to over 300 fac FAQ:
1. "Why perform any of these evaluations?"

ABOUT MBS IMAGING:
MBS Imaging is Chicagoland's premiere provider for mobile dysphagia diagnostics. MBS Imaging has earned it's reputation of exceptional quality service, timely referral fulfillment, and superb customer service by serving over 250 facilities throughout the Chicagoland area. Our service is covered by Medicare and all major health insurance companies. OUR OPERATION:
Send us a referral using our simple referral process and we will be at your facility in 48 hours or less. Our team consists of highly experienced Speech-Language pathologists, physicians, and lab technicians. Using our mobile imaging suites we are able to provide quick and efficient swallow studies without having to occupy any room in your facility. We collaborate with the facility SLP in order to provide maximal results and a least restrictive diet for your patient unlike service at a hospital. Upon the completion of the evaluation we provide a diet recommendation slip and a full digital copy of the test for patient education and treatment planning. Our highly detailed type written reports are sent the same day to the facility. WHERE WE SERVE:
MBS Imaging is the only dysphagia diagnostic service that can serve the needs of CCRC's, SNF's, Assisted Living, and Home Health. Our innovative billing processes make our superior service also the most cost saving service on the market. "Why would I use a mobile service instead of sending my patient to the hospital?"
-Wait times:The wait time for a VFSS at hospitals in the Chicagoland area can range from a week to a month!
-Lack of Communcation: The facility SLP barely has any communication with the hospital SLP and often struggles to get details from a video performed at a hospital. Not only do we collaborate with the facility SLP but we also provide a digital copy of the test for them to review at any time.
-Patient Comfort and Success: Sending patients to the hospital takes a toll on your patient from the duration of an ambulance ride and then time spent in a waiting room. It isnt uncommon that patients are already asleep by the time the test begins. It is often disorienting to send a patient to a hosptial to work with helath care providers they have never met before and can also provide added anxiety for the patient.
-Cost: Our service saves facilities a lot of money.

2. "What will happen to my loved one during this test?"
- The Modified Barium Swallow study is a short test in which the client sits comfortably in our mobile imaging suite while taking a few bites and sips of food infused with barium while undergoing a video x-ray.
- The Fiberopric Endoscopic Swallow evaluation is also a short evaluation which requires the insertion of a small camera through the nose in order to observe a patient eat and drink his or her meal.

REASONS MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS ORDER VIDEO SWALLOW STUDIES OR FIBEROPTIC ENDOSCOPIC SWALLOW EVALUATIONS

Indications for an instrumental swallowing exam include the following:

1. Concerns regarding the safety and efficiency of swallow function
-Contribution of dysphagia to nutritional compromise (dehydration, malnutrition)
-Contribution of dysphagia to pulmonary compromise (aspiration pneumonitis)
-Contribution of dysphagia to concerns for airway safety (e.g., choking)

2.The need to identify disordered swallowing physiology to guide management and treatment (You cannot treat what you cannot see!)

3. Inconsistent signs and symptoms in the findings of a non-instrumental examination (coughing, wet vocal quality, choking, etc)

4.The need to assist in the determination of a differential medical diagnosis related to the presence of pathological swallowing

5. Presence of a medical condition or diagnosis associated with a high risk of dysphagia (Cancer, COPD, Stroke, Parkinsons Disease, ALS, etc.)

6. Previously identified dysphagia with a suspected change in swallow function that may change recommendations

7. Presence of a chronic degenerative condition with a known progression or the recovery from a condition that may require further information for the management of oropharyngeal function.

Speech-Pathologists love oral care, because we know of the strong connection between poor oral care and aspiration pneumonia.
New research makes a compelling case that poor oral hygiene may also be a contributing factor in Ischemic strokes.
Moral of the story: Keep cleaning those mouths!

Bacteria found in the mouth has also been found in the brains of stroke patients. But the significance of the association remains up for debate.
