We are so grateful to all those who attended our free community lecture Monday evening on “Stroke: Why Every Minute Matters.”
The lecture, presented by the Foundation’s Community Education Committee, featured Lauren Fink, BSN, RN, CNRN, SCRN, the Clinical Manager, Service Line Operations – Neuroscience at Cottage Health in Santa Barbara. Additionally, LVMC Emergency Department Director Ryan Stevens, RN, presented about the hospital’s recertification of its Stroke Ready Hospital designation through the Center for Improvement in Healthcare Quality (CIHQ).
Fink advised people to know the signs of stroke, using the easy-to-remember phrase BE FAST. Stroke symptoms can appear suddenly, and quick action can save a life.
BE FAST stands for:
B — Balance: Sudden loss of balance or coordination
E — Eyes: Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
F — Face: Face drooping or numbness, especially on one side
A — Arm: Arm or leg weakness or numbness on one side of the body
S — Speech: Slurred speech or difficulty speaking or understanding
T — Time: Call 911 immediately if any of these symptoms appear
