If you or someone you know is in need of Psychological testing, you need to educate yourself on the difference between an LPA vs. Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner.

We often get asked:

“Isn’t a Nurse Practitioner able to do the same thing as a Psychological Associate?”

The short answer: No — they serve different (but complementary) roles.

Here’s a simple breakdown:

🧠 Licensed Psychological Associate (LPA)

Primary Strength: Psychological Testing & Assessment

✔️ Administers and interprets IQ, achievement, ADHD, autism, and personality tests
✔️ Provides comprehensive psychological evaluations
✔️ Diagnoses mental health conditions
✔️ Provides therapy
❌ Does NOT prescribe medication

Best utilized for:
• School-required evaluations
• ADHD testing with objective measures
• Autism evaluations (ADOS-2, cognitive testing)
• Learning disability assessments
• Court-defensible psychological reports

💊 Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)

Primary Strength: Medication Management & Medical Evaluation

✔️ Performs psychiatric evaluations
✔️ Diagnoses mental health conditions
✔️ Prescribes psychiatric medications
✔️ Orders labs and monitors physical health related to medications
✔️ Practices independently (in KY)

Best utilized for:
• Medication management
• Stabilizing severe mental health conditions
• Managing depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, etc.
• Medical rule-outs and medication adjustments

Why This Matters

Nurse Practitioners cannot independently administer and interpret full standardized psychological test batteries (IQ tests, achievement batteries, personality inventories, comprehensive autism batteries) in the same way a psychologist or LPA can.

Why?
Because psychological testing is regulated under psychology licensure laws, not nursing laws. In Kentucky, interpretation of psychological tests is considered the practice of psychology.

Psychological testing and medication management are not interchangeable services.
• If a child needs formal ADHD testing for school accommodations → Psychological testing is required.
• If someone needs medication management for depression → A psychiatric provider is required.

The strongest mental health systems use both roles together to provide comprehensive care.

Mental health is most effective when evaluation, data, and medical care work hand in hand.t

Folks, we had a near miss this morning, but quick intervention by the parents, prevented the worst, but it’s weighing heavy on our hearts, so I wanted to get this out and hope it helps.

Teen Su***de Prevention: You Are Not Alone

Teen su***de is a serious and heartbreaking issue—and it is also preventable. At Heartstrings Mental Health, we believe that every teen deserves to feel heard, supported, and hopeful about their future.

Many adolescents struggle silently with depression, anxiety, trauma, or overwhelming stress, often believing they have to manage it on their own. They don’t. Seeking mental health services is not a sign of weakness—it is a sign of strength. Counseling and psychological support provide teens with a safe, confidential space to talk, develop healthy coping skills, and better understand their emotions before they become overwhelming.

Early intervention saves lives. When teens receive the right support at the right time, outcomes improve—and hope grows.

Parents, caregivers, educators, and peers play a vital role in prevention. Take changes in mood or behavior seriously. Listen without judgment. Normalize conversations about mental health just as we do physical health. Most importantly, remind teens that asking for help is okay—and that help is available.
