Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system (CNS) characterized by chronic inflammation, demyelination, gliosis, and neuronal loss.

Nationally and globally, there is growing awareness about multiple sclerosis, people living with the disease and the MS movement. Together, we are working to cure MS while empowering people affected by MS to live their best lives. There is always more that can be done to spread the word, to share knowledge about research and progress in treatments, and to support those affected by MS. We can all play an important role in continuing this work.

There wasnโ€™t a dry eye in the clinic today. We celebrated a massive milestone: this warrior stood for the first time since their injury, utilizing the standing frame.

While the emotional lift of seeing the world at eye-level again is incredible, the physiological work happening below the surface is just as powerful. Getting upright is vital medicine for spinal cord injury recovery:

๐Ÿฆด Building Bone Density: Loading the skeletal system to fight osteoporosis. โค๏ธ Boosting Circulation: letting gravity assist blood flow and cardiovascular health. ๐Ÿง  Psychosocial Power: The confidence shift and mood boost that comes from being tall and interacting face-to-face is unmatched. ๐Ÿšฝ Improved bowel and bladder function: Gravity helps the internal systems work more efficiently. ๐Ÿ’ช Prevention of pressure sores: Relieving constant pressure on the sitting surfaces is vital for skin integrity.

This moment was beautiful, but itโ€™s also just the beginning block. Excellent progress today, and so much more to follow.
