Today is World Stroke Day. A stroke, sometimes called a brain attack, occurs when something blocks the blood supply to part of the brain or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. In either case, parts of the brain become damaged or can die. A stroke can cause lasting brain damage, long-term disability, or even death, but there is hope! With intensive therapy, a patient may regain much of their function and continue to improve through the principles of neuroplasticity for years after stroke onset.

Additionally, recognizing the signs and symptoms of stroke and obtaining ๐—™.๐—”.๐—ฆ.๐—ง. treatment can lessen the brain damage that a stroke can cause. If you think someone may be having a stroke, act ๐—™.๐—”.๐—ฆ.๐—ง and do the following simple test:

๐—™โ€”Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

๐—”โ€”Arms: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

๐—ฆโ€”Speech: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?

๐—งโ€”Time: If you see any of these signs, call 9-1-1 right away.

Note the time when any symptoms first appear. This information helps health care providers determine the best treatment for each person. Do not drive to the hospital or let someone else drive you. Call an ambulance so that medical personnel can begin life-saving treatment on the way to the emergency room.

In this session, we used โ€œUnder the Bridgeโ€ by the Red Hot Chili Peppers to help our client with multiple sclerosis practice clear, strong speech.

Singing (or chanting) each line gave us a fun and motivating way to target breath support, loudness, and overarticulation โ€” all skills that support clearer communication in daily life.

Because fatigue associated with multiple sclerosis can cause speech to become slurred (a condition known as dysarthria), using music helps us maintain the muscles used for speech while reinforcing compensatory strategies like slowing down, overarticulating, and projecting the voice. ๐ŸŽต๐Ÿ’ฌ
