Meet our music therapist, Isabella Perez!
Izzy is one of our incredible music therapists who shows up with compassion and care for our clients and their families.

1. What inspired you to pursue a career in music therapy?
"The first exposure I had to music therapy was seeing a clip on the news of a hospice nurse singing to her patients. Since then, it stayed in my heart. My passion for music began in Church singing worship and my desire to help and serve people continued to grow. When I found I could combine them, it seemed like the perfect combination. It's a privilege to be let into people's lives within therapy and music has the ability to bring joy, help process emotions both good and bad and it crosses any language and physical barrier. Being in the career is what inspires me to keep going."

2. What is your favorite part of your job?
"I love seeing how the music impacts the individual person or group I'm with. It fills me up so much to see someone smile, laugh, sing or move to the music in ways they aren't able to otherwise. Especially when the changes are subtle or you are simply helping someone relax or fall asleep who is experiencing intense pain physically or emotionally and music is the only thing to calm them."

3. How do you see music bringing people together in your work?
"I've seen it in an individual family setting, with the parent seeing their child/young adult come to life expressing themselves verbally, emotionally, physically and or creatively in new ways or for the first time. As well as in my two senior groups I have, I see some of the residents sing along, request songs, cry, smile, laugh with me, make eye contact, reach out for touch or close their eyes while listening to the familiar songs. It connects the group in a shared experience with or without words."

4. Lastly, what is a fun fact about you that may surprise people?
"Haha I love some good rock, occasionally a little metal."

Thank you for everything you do, Izzy. We are so grateful to have you on the team! 🥰

Meet our music therapist, Laura!

Laura continues to show up with a joyful, compassionate spirit and facilitates strong connections with our clients and their families.

1. What inspired you to pursue a career in music therapy?
"I have always had a passion for music and helping others. Music therapy made itself the best and most exciting option as a career path to spend my days making music while helping others. As a teenager I became involved with the community based learning program in my high school, which led me to the exposure of music therapy. With music being a lifelong passion of mine, it blended with my growing passion of wanting to work with individuals with special needs."

2. What is your favorite part of your job?
"I love seeing the growth and progress that is made over time within music therapy. There are little successes within every session that, over time, form into larger successes that help my clients to improve functional skills that benefit their daily quality of life. Aside from witnessing long-term growth in my clients, I also love the creativity and silliness that comes up within my daily sessions. I feel very fortunate to be a light in my clients’ weeks, as music tends to be a highly preferred therapy in the busy weekly therapy schedules that most of my clients have."

4. Can you share a memorable moment that happened while working with a client?
"Some of the most powerful moments to me are when a patient is able to improve their expressive communication skills. One of the most memorable of these moments in my career was helping an adult nonverbal client speak her name for the first time. I have experienced many moments of clients finally being able to express their emotions, preferences, and needs. These are some of the most impactful changes I have been able to witness in my work as a music therapist"

7. Lastly, what is a fun fact about you that may surprise people?
"I am an experienced fire dancer. The prop I am trained in is called fire poi, which I started at just 16 years old!"

Here’s a throwback to 2011 when our music therapy tone chime choir participated at Capilano Mall in North Vancouver, BC 🎶🎅🏻

These are incredible humans participating in a music therapy tone chime choir as part of their stroke recovery journey. Music therapy interventions like this can support motor coordination, cognitive processing, communication, and social connection while honoring each person’s strengths and individuality.

Recovery extends beyond physical outcomes. Music offers a way to reconnect with self, express emotions, and experience belonging.

Holidays can stir up old wounds in unexpected ways and suddenly the loss feels fresh again. That doesn’t mean you’re “too sensitive.” It means you loved deeply, and your nervous system remembers.

Music can be one gentle way to honor that love:

🎵 A “memory song” played in their honor

🎵 A tiny playlist of songs that bring them to mind

🎵 One memory written down while a meaningful song plays

It's okay to miss them and still laugh at a story, enjoy dessert, or feel small moments of peace. Grief and joy can sit at the same table.
If you’re carrying an empty chair in your heart this year, you’re not alone.

At Mewsic Moves, we're here for you and send our warm wishes if you're missing someone this holiday season.

We talk about it often but what does “rewiring the brain” actually mean?

Inside your brain are billions of neurons (brain cells). They “talk” to each other through tiny connections called synapses. When you repeat a thought, behavior, or experience, the neurons involved fire together again and again.

Over time, those pathways become stronger and faster, like a well-worn trail in a forest.
This is often summarized as: “Neurons that fire together, wire together.”

This can work for us or against us:
In anxiety and depression, the brain can get stuck in loops of worry, fear, or hopelessness.
Those patterns become familiar pathways the brain travels automatically.
The hopeful news:

Because of neuroplasticity, we can build new pathways that support calm, connection, and a healthier mindset.

In a structured music therapy setting, music can interrupt negative thoughts, regulate the nervous system, and create new emotional pathways.

Bottom line: your brain can change at any age.

When the holidays feel heavy, it can seem like everyone else got the “festive” memo but you.
If this season feels dark, numb, or just “off,” you’re not broken: your nervous system might be overwhelmed. And that makes sense.
Here are 3 gentle, music-based practices you can try:

One-song walk
Put on one calming or steady song and walk around the block or around your home. No pressure to “fix” anything; just let your body move while the music holds a simple rhythm.

Morning light playlist
Choose 2–3 softer songs to play while you open the curtains or sit by a window. Pairing music with morning light can give your brain a gentle cue: “I’m here. I’m safe. I’m starting my day.”

Feel-your-feelings song
Pick a song that matches your mood: sad, tired, angry, or hopeful, and let yourself feel for the length of that one track. You can sit, sway, hum, or journal while it plays. When the song ends, take a slow breath and notice: “What do I need next?”

You don’t have to be cheerful to be worthy of care.

Small, repeatable practices can be a lifeline when the holidays feel heavy. We're here to help and we offer a free 15 minute consultation. Feel free to DM us with more questions!

If Thanksgiving feels “too much” for your child (or for you), you’re not alone.

Big gatherings, new smells, unexpected noises, and changes in routine can be especially overwhelming for kids and adults who may be neurodivergent.

Needing support doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. It means you’re listening to your (or your child’s) nervous system, and that’s something to be proud of.

Save this for today and share with someone who might need it. Wishing all of you a Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate 🧡
