We are so excited to share that we have a book that's going to be available in two weeks! Written by our founder and CEO, John Mews.

"Icky Thoughts" follows a young boy named Jacob who informs his mom about anxiety and negative thoughts in his mind. With the support of a music therapist, Jacob learns to turn the icky thoughts into calmer, kinder ones.

Not only is it a heartwarming story, there are direct resources available in the book for teachers, parents, and children.

Today, we acknowledge and honor veterans who served this country. Music therapy has a rich history with veterans.

From WWII hospital wards to today’s VA programs, music therapists use rhythm, songwriting, and listening to help veterans cope with PTSD, trauma, loss, and reconnect with themselves and others.

Some goal areas that music therapy addresses here are: supporting trauma processing, regulating heart beat and blood pressure, decreasing anxiety, reducing isolation, and reestablishing identity.

Happy Veteran's Day and thank you to all who have served!

As music therapists, we use music to hold space for others but what happens to our own music in the process?

Over time, the songs we once played for joy can start to feel like tools of the trade. Practice turns into planning. Performance turns into clinical facilitation.

But our musicianship is more than a skill, it’s a living part of who we are.

Caring for that part means making time to create, play, and listen without clinical purpose. To reconnect with the reasons we fell in love with music in the first place.

🎶 Self-care for a music therapist isn’t always silence: sometimes it’s singing for yourself.

Because the more we nurture our own musical voice, the more authentically we can help others find theirs.

Music has a way of helping us remember who we are.

In music therapy, we often see how sound and self are intertwined.
When someone creates, chooses, or listens to music, they’re telling a story about their identity: about belonging, values, memories, and emotions that words alone can’t always express.

For some, music becomes a way to explore who they are becoming, like a client navigating gender identity through songwriting, or a person with a new diagnosis finding empowerment in music.

Through this process, music therapy offers more than expression, it offers affirmation.

🎵 Music says: “You are seen. You are heard. You are valid.”

Every song carries meaning.

In music therapy, choosing a song isn’t just about mood or genre, it’s about emotional safety.

A familiar lyric, a melody from childhood, or even a specific artist can open a door to powerful memories; sometimes healing, sometimes painful.

That’s why ethical song selection matters. Before introducing a piece of music, music therapists consider:
🎶 Could this song evoke distress or ignite a trigger for the client?
🎶 Does this music reflect the client’s cultural or personal story or mine?
🎶 Am I creating space for the client’s voice, or filling it with my own preferences?

Music therapy isn’t about using any song that “fits.” It’s about listening: first to the client’s needs, then to the music that can safely meet them.

Because in the right context, a song can hold what words can’t.
But in the wrong one, it can open wounds too soon.

💛 Ethical music therapy means treating every song as both art and responsibility.

Question: Music can hold emotion, but it can also stir it. How do you notice when a song feels safe or too much for you?

Music is often called a “universal language,” but in music therapy, we know it’s more complex than that.

Every culture carries its own rhythms, meanings, and emotional languages through music. What feels soothing or sacred in one context may carry a very different meaning in another.

Practicing cultural humility in music therapy means approaching each client’s musical world with openness and curiosity, not assuming universality, but listening to learn.

It’s asking questions like:
🎵 “What music feels like home to you?”
🎵 “Are there sounds or songs that hold meaning in your community?”
🎵 “How can I meet you in your music, instead of bringing mine?”

Cultural humility isn’t about knowing every culture’s music, it’s about recognizing that our clients are the experts of their own soundscape.

🌏 Every client’s music carries meaning — our role is to listen with curiosity, not assumption.

Grief has a rhythm: unpredictable, uneven, and deeply personal.

In music therapy, we don’t try to make grief go away. Music therapy creates a space where it can be heard. Grief can be isolating, loud, and there is no timeline for it.

Songwriting: An excellent source for those who are grieving. Provides a safe container to express complex emotions like anger, guilt, or longing.

Lyric analysis: Exploring the lyrics of a client preferred song that resonates with the client’s experience or feelings. The music therapist works with the client to explore the lyrics and their personal interpretation.

Drumming: Offers physical release for emotions that may be too intense to verbalize. Within groups, participants drum together to represent their emotional states, then transition into a unified rhythm; symbolizing shared understanding and support.

GIM/guided imagery through music: Only done by music therapists who have had additional training with the technique. Using carefully chosen music to evoke imagery, emotion, and reflection related to the grief experience.

Music offers a gentle structure for emotions that feel overwhelming: a place to revisit memories, process pain, and find moments of connection.

🎶 Music doesn’t erase loss. But it can hold it with compassion.

How Music Therapy Supports Healing in Oncology Care

What is Music Therapy in Oncology?
Music therapy in oncology can include listening to or creating music, songwriting, guided relaxation with music, and more; all tailored to each person’s preferences and needs.

Benefits of Music Therapy for Cancer Patients:
Emotional Support: Music provides a safe space for expressing feelings, reducing anxiety, and finding moments of hope and joy.

Pain and Symptom Management:
Research shows that music therapy can help ease pain by distracting pain receptors, reduce nausea, and promote relaxation during treatment.

Connection and Empowerment: Creating or sharing music together fosters a sense of connection: with oneself, loved ones, and the care team; helping to reduce feelings of isolation.

Quality of Life: Music therapy supports overall well-being, offering comfort and meaningful experiences even during the toughest times.
