Independence at Home

Independence at Home IAH offers no-cost programs and services designed to assist older adults and their caregivers.

Independence at Home is a community service of SCAN, a senior-focused organization founded in Long Beach, California in 1977. The goal then was to create a program to provide seniors easy access to community-based services that would allow them to remain healthy and independent at home. Today, Independence at Home offers a range of programs to meet the needs of seniors, disabled adults and their caregivers -- including government programs and in-home assistance, case management and referrals to resources. If you or a loved one needs help living safely at home, please contact Independence at Home at 866-421-1964.

March 5, 2026 is National Slam the Scam Day!

Scammers continue to target older adults with fake calls, texts, and emails pretending to be from Social Security or other government agencies. As part of National Consumer Protection Week, we’re encouraging everyone — especially older adults and their families — to stay alert and informed.

In 2025, there were over 330,000 reports of government‑imposter scams across the country. Many of these scams are aimed at older adults, veterans, and individuals who may be managing benefits or personal finances. Staying aware can prevent financial loss and protect your peace of mind.

Common signs of a scam:
- Someone claims to be from Social Security or another agency
- They say your account has a problem or you "won a prize"
- They pressure you to act immediately
- They demand payment by gift card, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency

Protect yourself and your loved ones:
- Hang up on suspicious calls — real government agencies won’t threaten you

Let’s help protect each other by sharing these reminders. Together, we can help keep our community safe.
