Good news, UPD Family ―

By popular vote, we have another hero to recognize this month! Please join us in celebrating the most nominated individual for the THIRD Recognize Your Hero Initiative in the month of OCTOBER 2016:

WILSON LAM

This honor bestows upon its awardee permanent recognition for serving as an exemplary example and being an inspiration to our members in Upsilon Phi Delta National Honor Society. WILSON LAM won this distinction by a 100% majority vote. Some of the reasons cited for the nomination of WILSON LAM included, "Wilson Lam is the real leadership behind UPD. Even after nearly half the UPD Executive Board resigned due to irreconcilable frustrations with the UPD leadership, Wilson stayed behind to keep UPD alive solely for the students," and "He is the glue that holds the entire organization together, and indeed, UPD would be a lost cause without him."

As Director of Events, Wilson aims to assist in providing the best possible healthcare experience for students that strive to be better. He has worked for 4 years in Fountain Valley Hospital as a Volunteer Coordinator and has assisted many healthcare managers in improving production. Wilson is also interning at the VA hospital in Long Beach under the System Redesign Department and utilizes Lean and Six Sigma concepts to help improve efficiency and flow in many projects with Primary Care and Mental Health. Wilson’s overall goal is to become a hospital administrator and provide a great healthcare facility for both patients and staff.

We at the CSULB chapter of the Upsilon Phi Delta National Honor Society would like to thank WILSON LAM for inspiring us all. Keep up the great work and thank you for all that you do!

Previously most-voted for individual, ROBERT GOMEZ, was disqualified due to a self-nomination. Please remember that you CANNOT vote for yourself -- this is the second rule in the RYH Initiative Form. Doing so will permanently disqualify you from the system. While we think it's wonderful that some individuals hold themselves in high enough esteem to nominate themselves, surely there is someone else in your life that you would much rather give recognition to! Remember, part of being a manager is knowing when to recognize another; self-recognition reflects poorly on those who do it and does not reflect the mission of UPD or RYH.

Good news, UPD Family ―

By popular vote, we have another hero to recognize this month! Please join us in celebrating the most nominated individual for the SECOND Recognize Your Hero Initiative in the month of SEPTEMBER 2016:

AUTHOR YAO

This honor bestows upon its awardee permanent recognition for serving as an exemplary example and being an inspiration to our members in Upsilon Phi Delta National Honor Society. AUTHOR YAO won this distinction by a 40% majority vote. Some of the reasons cited for the nomination of AUTHOR YAO included, "The reason why UPD is still advancing" and "His dedication to healthcare department given all his other responsibilities stands out above many others that I know from working with ASI, BUILD, HCASF and so on."

Author Yao is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Care Administration and a minor in Management Information Systems at California State University, Long Beach, with an expected graduation of May 2017. He is also concurrently a Research Scholar in the National Institutes of Health's Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (NIH BUILD) Initiative and a Research Assistant for multiple faculty involved in biomedical research. In a world where technology seems to reduce costs and increase efficiency in all industries except healthcare, Author is interested in researching the role of informatics in improving health outcomes in order integrate more prudent technological solutions in public health and healthcare operations.

He has presented multiple posters at a number of conferences and, most recently, currently serves as the Secretary of Academic Affairs in the President's Cabinet for his university's non-profit auxiliary, and a Quality Management Intern at the Veterans Affairs Long Beach Healthcare System.

In his free time, Author enjoys connecting with and helping his peers as a Teaching Assistant in the Department of Health Care Administration, where he has assisted in teaching five courses, including two international and two graduate courses, to date. Following his graduation, he hopes to continue his education by pursuing a doctoral degree in Biomedical or Health Informatics.

We at the CSULB chapter of the Upsilon Phi Delta National Honor Society would like to thank AUTHOR YAO for inspiring us all. Keep up the great work and thank you for all that you do!

The results are in! The most voted for hero of the month of August 2016 was...

Erlyana Erlyana, MD, PhD

Dr. Erlyana obtained her medical degree in her home country, Indonesia, where she also served as the Director of the Jungkat Public Health Center for three years. She continued her education at the University of Southern California to obtain her Master of Public Policy & Management. Nearly a half a decade later, she obtained her PhD in Public Administration, with a focus in Health Service Administration, also from the University of Southern California in 2008.

Dr. Erlyana is presently an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Care Administration at California State University, Long Beach. Her passion for helping her students has led to her appointment as the faculty advisor for the only two and most prominent student organizations in Health Care Administration: the Health Care Administration Student Forum and the Upsilon Phi Delta National Honor Society. She also serves as an academic advisor, a coach for the annual College Bowl competition, and a faculty research mentor for undergraduate students in the National Institutes of Health Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) Initiative.

Those who nominated Dr. Erlyana for the Recognize Your Hero Award described her as being, "great support and help," "a philanthropist who does not care about elevating herself, but rather, always places her students first," and "always a happy person to be around."

We would like to recognize Dr. Erlyana for all of her contributions to the furtherance of Health Care Administration students' development and goals. Thank you, Dr. Erlyana, for all that you do!

Have you recognized YOUR hero? We currently only have one nomination submitted -- this nominee will be the default winner if no further nominations are made!

Make sure to nominate your hero for our Recognize Your Hero (RYH) Initiative in the month of August:
http://tinyurl.com/csulbupd-ryh

Only UPD Founders (i.e., UPD Inductees), the current UPD E-Board, and HCA Faculty/Staff are currently eligible to submit a nomination and be nominated for the month of August. New UPD Pledges will also be able to nominate and be nominated if they join during the month of August.

THIS IS A VERY SHORT FORM THAT SHOULD TAKE NO MORE THAN 5 MINUTES. We call them heroes, but they are also known as our mentors. Our guides, our role models, and sometimes even our best friend. A hero is someone who inspires you. A hero could be someone you work with, someone you have known for what…

Everyone deserves to be appreciated, and sometimes, we forget that.

At UPD, we strive to ensure that everyone is recognized, but on occasion, there are those individuals amongst us that still manage to stand out even from the best of us through spectacular feats and accomplishments. These individuals, by definition, are what makes them heroes.

Yet, sadly most of these are unsung heroes. For that reason, while we cannot sing tales of glory for these heroes, UPD endeavors to do the next best thing: we recognize them through the Recognize Your Hero Initiative. And through such recognitions, we ensure that they are recognized for the gift of inspiration that they continue to radiate into our lives.

The individual that receives the most nominations will be permanently recognized on our social media (website and Facebook) and receive an UPD Certificate of Recognition. The RYH Initiative recognizes a hero every month during the academic year, and the nomination cycle starts at the first of every month and concludes on the last day of every month prior to midnight. Honorable mentions may also be made with enough nominations.

You can nominate an individual for recognition by filling out our short (less than 5 mins) form at: http://tinyurl.com/csulbupd-ryh

DON'T FORGET TO NOMINATE SOMEONE FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST! The deadline to nominate your hero this month is August 31, 2016 (Wednesday) before midnight (11:59PM).

*Only students currently involved in UPD (pledges, inductees & e-board) are eligible to submit a nomination and be nominated.
*UPD Founders are considered UPD Inductees from the Alpha Pledge Class. Please use your old CSULB Student ID.
*HCA Staff/Faculty at CSULB are exceptions, and can submit a nomination or be nominated regardless of participation in CSULB UPD.
