Find out how the Jump Start Mental Health Fellowship program can launch your career through a free 12-week intensive classroom and internship training. Jump Start is a subsidized fellowship for people interested in working in the community (public) mental health field. in any field and those who have at least 24 college credits. Participants will be trained in the classroom and gain first hand experience during an assigned internship. The Fellowship provides both philosophical and skills-based training for people looking to enter the mental health field who may not have previous experience.

NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS!
Jump Start is a 12-week, full time training program for individuals who are interested in working in the adult community mental health field. The program is open to anyone with at least 24 college units (any courses) and who demonstrate proficiency in writing and speaking in English. Candidates who meet the qualifications AND have one or more of the following will be given preference: Bachelor’s degree or higher in any field, individuals who have lived experience and/or family members and individuals from un-served and/or underserved ethnic minority populations.

Participants will be trained in the classroom and in the field where they gain firsthand experience during an assigned internship.

Classes are Mondays and Fridays from 9 AM – 3 PM. Internship days are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays for an 8 hour day (hours vary by site).

Jump Start is funded by the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health to expand and diversify the workforce. We are looking for participants who are highly motivated to work in the public mental health field in Los Angeles county.

Jump Start provides a $40 daily stipend.

We are now accepting applications for our spring 2022 session. The session will run from
March 28 to June 17, 2022. Deadline for application submission is February 4, 2022.

Jump Start is the best kept employment secret in Los Angeles County for recent graduates, friends and family members who would like to work in the field of community mental health (public mental health).

What is Jump Start? Jump Start is a 12 week, full-time fellowship program for individuals who are interested in working in the adult community mental health field.

Who is a good fit? Anyone who has the heart to work with the populations that we serve and who has at least 24 college units and who would like to work in Los Angeles County.

The training is a combination of full days in the *classroom integrated with full days in a field internship.

*Classroom: Monday through Friday, 9 AM - 3 PM, weeks one and two. Mondays and Fridays, weeks three to twelve.
Internship: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, weeks three to twelve. Hours are based on internship agency hours (typically 9 AM - 5 PM)
*PLEASE NOTE: Classroom courses may take place online and/or in person, depending on COVID-19 restrictions and space availability for social distancing.

A calendar with dates for classroom versus field days and the location for specific classroom days will be given upon acceptance into the program.

• Unofficial/official transcript (unofficial transcript must include your name and degree(s) conferred)
• If you have been vaccinated, a copy of your COVID-19 vaccination card

What is the goal of the program? The program's goal is to enhance the mental health workforce and to help participants gain employment in Los Angeles County. To achieve this, Jump Start's intensive program combines classroom learning in Long Beach with applied internships that are located throughout Los Angeles County. Graduates earn a Certificate as Mental Health Recovery Specialist (which is recognized by some agencies as 1 year of experience in the field).

Jump Start is a part of Mental Health America of Los Angeles' Training and Workforce Development efforts to develop a diversified workforce and we are partnered with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. There is a $40 per day stipend for travel expenses.

JUMP START NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS! Jump Start is an intensive 12-week full time training program geared towards individuals who are looking for work in the entry-level community mental health field.
We combine theoretical classroom training with practical internship experience to prepare our participants to work successfully in the field.
On Mondays and Fridays, participants attend class where they learn different aspects of the mental health field. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, participants apply their knowledge at an internship site.
The program is funded by LA County Department of Mental Health. We cover tuition and books and offer a $40 daily transportation reimbursement for participants in the program. To find out more about the program and the agencies with whom we partner.
