Eclipse Glasses Necessary To Protect Retina From Severe Damage, Optometrist Says
In light of Saturday’s annular eclipse, KLAS-TV Share to FacebookShare to Twitter Las Vegas (10/11, Jane Belleza ) reported, “Wearing eclipse glasses is” absolutely necessary to block “all ultraviolet rays and almost all visible light,” thereby preventing severe damage to the retina. Optometrist Jacquie Bowen, OD, “Vice President of the American Optometric Association...said people may not feel eye damage immediately” if they look at the eclipse without wearing eye protection. She stated, “So if you have an extra dose of UV light to which that part of retina is exposed, your risk of central vision lost is much higher.” Dr. Bowen added, “I wish the eyes would sting and be red right away immediately in the days following but much of that time the damage is so insidious and it might be a while before it takes effect so being wise about how to view the eclipse beforehand and staying very consistent with getting an eye exam on a regular basis.”
