Spring Update: A few planters have started to roll. Most are waiting for ground temperatures to increase and frost to go out. A couple reminders for spring:
1. Stay Safe. Slow down. Get the job done right. Make it home at the end of the day to see your family.
2. Corn Planting depth: I recommend absolutely no less than 2" deep. It doesn't matter if you think you have enough moisture at 1.5", corn needs to be at least 2" deep to set roots where they need to be. The past few seasons we have seen some advantages to planting deeper such as 2.25-2.75" deep. The moisture and temperature are more even the deeper you go and therefore we have seen more even emergence. (Soils vary. Ideal planting depth does vary by soil type. Just keep it at 2" for sure!)
3. Planting Window: Avoid planting corn within 48hrs of a cold rain. Planting in this window can drastically increase the risk of imbibitional chilling. https://www.cropscience.bayer.us/articles/bayer/cold-saturated-soil-effects-on-corn-germination-and-emergence
If planted 48hrs or more prior to a cold rain event, the seed has time to acclimate to the soil conditions and is likely to handle the cold rain event better.
4. Early Soybean Planting: we continue to see a trend pushing soybean planting dates earlier. This trend has came with increased yields the earlier you plant. (Only watchout really is a late frost after emergence.) I recommend planting soybeans as soon as insurance date allows and field conditions are adequate. Put on a good treatment package and get them in the ground. They can handle the cool soil temps better than corn.
Have a safe spring!
