Charlie’s maintenance massage session.

When we first began, massage almost seemed “ticklish” to her because she would get hyper. I was able to work on her for 5/10 minutes straight then I’d have to treat bribe her. Not because she didn’t want the massage, it was just that touch was super sensitive to her and a bit overstimulating. With time, patience and love, Charlie now relaxes into her session and enjoys about 45 minutes straight. Charlie knows exactly what she wants and will move so I am in the areas she wants. She will roll to the other side intentionally right before I ask her, it’s as if she knows.

Earning her trust has been such a beautiful process.

This is my favorite part of volunteering in the surgery clinic, being the first person they see when they wake up. All the loves and snuggles. This little one was barely awake and reached over to feel their buddy. It was so precious.

A little info about what I do:

My name is Melissa Toney and I own PAWSitive Animal Massage. I am a licensed Small Animal Massage Practitioner through the department of health. I specialize in rehabilitation for your pets. My massage techniques are used to help animals with arthritis, injuries, illnesses, IVDD, seizure disorders, anxiety and so much more.
I am certified in Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Circulation Massage as well.

Most people in our community do not know that this service exists and some may even think that it is only a “luxury” but I can assure you it is so much more than that.

My services are meant to compliment your veterinary care and not to replace it.

Perfect example:

Your pet has been limping and you’re concerned they are injured. You schedule with your vet, and they take X-rays. They diagnose your pet with Osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease that breaks down the protective cartilage at the ends of their bones in their joints. As this wears down their bones begin to touch during movement and most times creates osteophytes (bone spurs). Even without the spurs, when bones lose that cushion and rub together it creates friction and inflammation and pain. They begin to get super stiff and without intervention it can be extremely painful for your pet.
Doctor talks to you about pain medication and joint supplements. Then you go home wondering, is there anything else we can do? The answer is: YES, massage!

My techniques are used in this circumstance to redirect edema caused by inflammation, address compensating muscles used overtime to take pressure off the affected joints, move more synovial fluid into the joints to create more cushion, relieve pain, and I am also stimulating their Parasympathetic Nervous System bringing them relaxation.

What I do is give your pets a non invasive approach to pain relief and a higher quality of life. I have dedicated my life to helping animals and teaching their parents how to help them through massage. Every session, if you’re interested, I will teach you how you can continue on your own at home.

Working with animals is my world and bettering their lives is my passion. I volunteer at our Humane Society in the Surgical Clinic recovering the patients after surgery. Each animal I work with I am able to apply massage techniques to help their body move out the anesthesia in a more efficient way. I also come in to work on the residents when I have available time. Working with the animals in the shelter is the most rewarding experience. I began there with my case studies in 2022.

Please help me spread awareness to our community about this holistic approach to help our pets.

Bailey’s mama reached out to me concerned about an injury to his right front limb. Upon arrival, Bailey’s arm was very swollen to to the point range of motion was very limited. He was not putting weight on it and was really struggling.

I had so many pre planned ideas of how to help him;

1. Address edema
2. Address compensating muscles
3. Address tight, fascial restriction in his hind
4. Relax him to help ease his pain
5. Gait analysis
6. Boost and support his immune system as it’s working overtime to help him heal.
7. pROM

But when I arrived I quickly decided the most beneficial technique for this specific session would be to redirect those fluids with the Sunburst Technique and follow up with a light Circulation Technique.

First, I made room in his upper leg to pull fluids gravity has fed all the way to his paws. Then I redirected fluids from his paw all the way towards his heart to be filtered more efficiently to exit the body. I then began his circulation massage by bringing oxygen and nutrient dense aortic blood straight to his front limb at the same speed as his heart beat. Finally I pulled fluids back up the leg towards the heart.

At the end of the session. Bailey got up, and started walking with weight on his paw. His paw was flat on the floor. Mom was very happy to see this as he had not done that since his injury.

Mom reached out the next day to let me know that the swelling was almost completely gone! We rescheduled for a few days later. When I arrived, Bailey’s swelling was gone, but he was limping on both arms. This is due to over compensating muscles. So this session I addressed compensating muscles.

I will see Bailey again next week and will give an update then!

Do you have a pet with inflammation or severe edema causing discomfort and limping? I can help! Please reach out to me, let me show you how you can help them at home on your own, or with me.
