For years, my body lived in a perpetual state of bracing, chronic vigilance, never safe to relax, enjoy, regulate or rest.
Here's what I learned from supporting a body shift from a chronic state of terror, bracing and pressure into a state of soft alertness and trust.
1. It takes time, gentleness, and infinite patience.
My body had lived in contraction for so long, it couldn’t just “feel safe.” Energy shifts slowly—especially the kind that’s been holding stress and trauma for decades.
Safety builds gradually. Be patient with your body. Honor the 0.1% shifts. Let them be enough. Avoid “big” catharsis or forced releases—what your body really needs is space, gentleness and to honor its pace of change.
2. Boundaries are the body’s first language of safety.
When emotional, somatic, or energetic boundaries are collapsed, the body cannot feel safe to feel or regulate. Rebuilding internal space was essential—learning to say no to urgency, overexposure, or old survival patterns helped the body feel held. My body needed to feel contained and protected by its own boundaries before it could change patterns.
3. The body doesn't respond to pressure but to attunement.
For years, I tried to "fix", relax or rush the body. It didn’t work. In fact, it made things worse. Because, unwillingly, my body was met with the very things that created and perpetuated the trauma- more pressure, more mis-attunement, more dismissal.
One of the primary traumas of the body is the trauma of not being attuned, of being neglected. When we learn to attune and meet the body differently, that's the healing we long for. When we listen, offer space, and attune, the body says, "Oh, I'm finally heard."
If you’re ready to start building this kind of relationship with your body—one that says “I’m here, I’m listening”—my Self-Attunement Audio Toolkit is an empowering source of support.
It’s a collection of audio-guided practices designed to restore connection, safety, and trust at the pace your body actually needs.
