If your child is struggling with stubborn eczema, it is tempting to eliminate foods until you find the one “causing” it. However, this strategy is outdated and can lead to more harm than good.
While children with eczema have an increased risk of food and environmental allergies, the evidence increasingly goes against broad elimination diets—in fact food avoidance early in life can increase the risk of a severe, anaphylactic food reaction because the immune system no longer recognizes what it should or shouldn’t be allergic to. Furthermore, it puts the child at risk for nutritional deficiencies and often just doesn’t work.
Before blindly embarking on any dietary changes, consult with an allergist familiar with both food and skin allergy. This is the safest and most effective route to long term skin care. Call 903-757-3808 for appointments.
