Markham Woods Animal Hospital Beyond Medicine, For the Pets who are Family 🐈❤️🐕 Give us a call!

In September 2022, Dr. Dana Hunley and Dr. Marianne Janosco proudly became the owners of Markham Woods Animal Hospital. Their vision was clear: to build a small animal practice that genuinely listens to pet families and customizes care based on each pet’s unique lifestyle. We’re more than just a full-service veterinary hospital—we’re a dedicated partner in your pet’s lifelong journey. From the excitement of your first puppy or kitten visit, through the playful teenage years, and into the gentle golden years of senior life, we’re here for every step. We’re proud to offer comprehensive in-house services, including lab work, radiographs, and surgical procedures, all designed to keep your pet healthy and comfortable.

Spring shedding can feel intense because, honestly, it often is.
Extra brushing helps manage loose coat and supports skin health, vacuuming and lint rollers keep fur from taking over the house, and a little patience goes a long way while coats adjust with the season.
Consistent grooming makes the whole process easier.

Chewing can support oral health, but not every product is appropriate for every dog. Texture, ingredients, hardness, and chewing style all matter. 🦴🐶

April is National Heartworm Awareness Month, so we wanted to share a little information about this serious — but preventable — disease.

Heartworm Disease:
• Spread by mosquitoes carrying heartworm larvae
• Most common in dogs, but can also affect cats, ferrets, and other mammals
• Signs may include coughing, trouble breathing, low energy, and weight loss
• Can cause severe damage to the heart and lungs and may be fatal if untreated
• Prevention is the safest and most effective way to protect your pet

Heartworm prevention should be given year-round, even for indoor pets, since mosquitoes are around in every season here in Florida.

At Markham Woods Animal Hospital, we offer convenient prevention options for dogs including ProHeart® 6, an injection that protects against heartworms for 6 months, and it pairs great with Bravecto® Quantum, an injection that provides long-lasting flea protection for up to a full year. These options make prevention simple without having to remember monthly doses.

For kitties we recommend Revolution Plus which is a monthly topical treatment that effectively protects your cat from Fleas and Heartworms.

Ask us about heartworm prevention at your next visit — we’re happy to help you find the best plan to keep your furry friends safe all year long! 🐾

🌸 Spring is here! And with the warmer weather comes a good reminder about Leptospirosis, a bacterial infection that dogs can be exposed to more easily this time of year.

Leptospirosis is spread through contaminated water, soil, or urine from infected animals, and the truth is — any dog can be at risk, no matter their age, breed, or lifestyle. Even dogs that don’t spend a lot of time outdoors can still be exposed.

Risk can increase if your dog:
• Drinks from puddles, ponds, lakes, or slow-moving water
• Spends time on rural property or around wildlife
• Has contact with rodents, farm animals, or backyard critters
• Visits dog parks, boarding facilities, training classes, or other places with dogs

Because this disease can be serious (and can also spread to people), prevention is very important. The good news is that there is a safe and effective vaccine that helps protect your dog.

If you’re not sure whether your pet is protected, feel free to give us a call — we’re always happy to help you decide what’s best for your furry family member. 🐾

🏆🐾 We have a celebrity in the building!🐾🏆

Huge congratulations to Dr. Crainick’s Mudi, Grim, who is currently ranked #1 Fastest Mudi in the country in AKC Fast CAT for 2026! 🇺🇸💨

Fast CAT is an AKC sport where dogs run a 100-yard dash chasing a lure, and speeds are recorded in miles per hour. Grim’s average speed has earned him the top spot in the nation for his breed which is an incredible accomplishment!

Mudi are a rare herding breed from Hungary known for their intelligence, athleticism, and drive — and Grim is proving just how fast and talented they can be.

We love seeing our doctors doing amazing things with their own pets, and Grim keeps us all entertained here at the hospital with his energy and personality.

Way to go Grim!! 🐶💨🏅

Vet-approved chews can support oral health, but they don’t replace brushing. Plaque below the gumline still needs hands-on care because dental disease affects more than just the mouth. 🦷🐾
