Fall Prevention Awareness Week September 23-29th, 2019

Falls are the single largest cause of death and injuries in older Americans. Each year, millions of seniors 65 and older fall. How can you or your loved one reduce their risk of falling? Physical activity plays a very important role.

1. Take a few steps daily to exercise the muscles.
2. Properly use mobility devices for safety such as wheelchairs and walkers

Many seniors feel that pain is just a natural part of aging but pain is not a part of aging. It should be reported to the doctor as soon as possible so the doctor can figure out the origination of the pain. Sure it may be arthritis but it is best to get it checked out.

Doctors do find it challenging to prescribe pain medication to seniors due to many variables such as their interaction with other medications they are taking and slower kidney function. So seniors and their loved ones should play an active role in this decision and don't live life in pain.

LONELY ELDERLY PATIENTS HEALTH CONDITIONS ARE WORSE THAN NON LONELY ELDERLY

Loneliness and social isolation are very common problems and affect about 30%-40% of older Americans. More lonely elderly patients suffered from health symptoms and received very aggressive end -of-life care than non lonely elderly patients, according to a study presented at an annual meeting of The Society of General Internal Medicine.

Ways we can prevent isolation in older adults;
*Compliments and positive comments boost the self esteem of seniors.
*Encourage dining with others.
*Encourage hearing and vision tests.
*Give a senior something to take care of such as a plant or animal.
*Encourage religious seniors to maintain attendance at their place of worship.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month

We all need shots (vaccines) to help protect us from serious diseases. This protection is called immunization. To help keep our community safe, Brighthope Homecare is proudly participating in National Immunization Awareness Month.

Shots can prevent serious diseases like the flu, measles, and pneumonia. It’s important to know which shots you need and when to get them, especially vulnerable populations like the very young and seniors.

Everyone age 6 months and older needs to get a flu vaccine every year. Other types of shots work best at specific ages or life stages.

If you have a child age 6 or younger, learn which shots your child needs.
