The Los Alamos Community Foundation (LACF), in partnership with the Anchorum Health Foundation in Santa Fe, has awarded Los Alamos Visiting Nurse Service, Inc. (LAVNS) a $29,000 grant to support separate grief group programs, one for adults and one for youth. LAVNS, a nonprofit serving the community for more than 50 years, provides hospice care, home health services, and emotional support to residents and their families.

LAVNS Clinical Manager Susan Edwards said that this generous grant is going to help ensure free access for both the adult group and a future adolescent grief group planned for 2026.

“The Los Alamos Grief Group offers a caring, safe place for people in our community to come together during times of loss,” Edwards said, adding that each six-week session brings together up to 12 participants, and throughout the year, as many as 96 residents may find connection and healing here. “These closed groups give people the comfort and support they need as they move through grief.”

This Anchorum grant provided through LACF, ensures the program can continue to remain cost-free for participants through fall 2026. While the main expenses are covered, additional tax-deductible donations will help keep this important service going for years to come.

Edwards welcomes people to join them for grief support at 3 p.m. Tuesdays at Rivera Funeral Home, 1627 A, Central Ave.

This grant to LAVNS is part of LACF’s broader Health and Wellness Initiative: Los Alamos Uniting for Community Health (LAUNCH), supported by Anchorum. LAUNCH continues to invest in mental health, community well-being, and accessible support services for residents of Los Alamos County.

LACF Program Manager and Anchorum Fellow Brandi Weiss has expressed gratitude for being able to help sustain programs that offer direct, meaningful support to local families, especially during times of loss.

By funding both current and future grief support groups, LACF and LAVNS aim to ensure that no one in Los Alamos has to navigate grief alone.

Those wishing to support the program or learn more about upcoming grief group sessions may contact LAVNS or visit the LACF website:

💜 Walking for a World Without Alzheimer’s! 💜

A little rain 🌧️ couldn’t stop the spirit of community at this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s!

LAVNS was proud to be represented as our own Ken Hendricks helped co-emcee the event 🎤, standing in support of all families affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Huge thanks to our friend Rachel at the Montecito of Santa Fe 📸 for the wonderful photos capturing the heart of the day.
Even on a rainy morning, hope shines through. 💜
