If you’re 45 or older, or have risk factors, consider talking with your provider about which screening option is right for you. Taking preventive steps today supports better health tomorrow!

Contractions began the night of her due date, signaling the on-schedule conclusion of a perfectly healthy pregnancy. Bags were packed, and a trip to Santa Fe was all planned to welcome the Bachman family’s second child into the world. But just hours later, Hannah Bachman found herself in a terrifying emergency fighting for two lives.

In this gripping account, read how heroic actions at Los Alamos Medical Center led by OB/GYN Dr. Daniel Marancenbaum – and a few serendipitous strokes of good fortune – both saved Hannah’s life and delivered a very healthy baby girl.

“There was this labor that I had planned in Santa Fe that was going to be this easy, no big deal, low-risk thing and suddenly my life was saved in Los Alamos,” Bachman said.

The Los Alamos Youth Soccer League (LASL) recently hosted a hands-on training led by Los Alamos Medical Center’s Sara Sena, Director of Inpatient and Emergency Services, and Julia Kilcer, Nurse Educator. Together, they provided Hands-Only CPR and EHAC (Early Heart Attack Care) instruction to students and several coaches, equipping them with lifesaving skills that can make a critical difference in an emergency.

The session held during American Heart Month focused on recognizing the signs of a heart attack and responding quickly and confidently using Hands-Only CPR. By bringing this education directly to young athletes and their mentors, the team helped build awareness, preparedness, and confidence both on and off the field.

“Teaching these skills at a young age empowers students to act quickly and confidently in an emergency. You’re never too young to learn how to save a life,” Sena said.

She added that she was inspired by the group’s engagement throughout the training. “The students were incredibly engaged and eager to learn. It was inspiring to see how seriously they took the responsibility of understanding CPR and heart attack warning signs.”

Think you might have the flu? Here’s what to do to take care of yourself and protect others:

- Stay home and rest. Avoid work, school or public places. Rest helps your body fight the infection and prevents it from spreading to others.

- Monitor your symptoms. Keep track of severity, duration and any changes in symptoms like fever, chills, cough, sore throat, body aches, fatigue, headache, runny or stuffy nose.

- Hydrate and manage symptoms. Drink plenty of water or herbal tea. Over-the-counter medications can help with symptoms. Avoid alcohol and smoking.

- Seek medical care if needed. Call your healthcare provider if you experience trouble breathing, chest pain, severe weakness, confusion, persistent high fever or worsening symptoms, especially if you are pregnant, older or have chronic conditions. Early treatment can help reduce complications.

- Protect your community. Cover coughs and sneezes, wash your hands frequently and stay home until you’ve been fever-free for at least 24 hours without medication.
