In an effort to provide more accessible eating disorder care, I’m excited to announce I can accept health insurance! I’m now in network with Blue Shield of CA, with more providers coming soon.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but, still wanting weight loss while in recovery is totally OK! ⁣

Although letting go of this desire may be an important part of your journey, shaming yourself for wanting something that isn’t “recovery oriented” can be very invalidating. ⁣

Eating disorder recovery is really fu***ng messy and by no means cookie cutter. Give yourself permission to struggle and accept where you are. You may find that doing so creates less resistance and support additional steps to recovery.

It’s a simple question I like to ask regarding the role of common disordered behaviors (purging, binging, restricting). Eating disorders may present as body image disturbances but that is only what we see at the surface. When we dig a little deeper we often find a much bigger wound that needs to be healed.⁣

Did you get enough love and affection when growing up? Are your thoughts and emotions validated? Have you been able to cope with loss or trauma? The eating disorder is often an attempt to satisfy those longing needs. When we are able to meet these needs in a healthier way, the eating disorder loses its power and purpose.

𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘶𝘮𝘢 𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘥 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦 has quickly become the cornerstone of my treatment. There is a misconception that everyone with an eating disorder has a history of trauma and everyone with a trauma history develops an eating disorder. While this is not true, there is an evident connection between trauma & eating disorder development. I’m only referencing one type of trauma (attachment) in this post. Keep in mind there are many others, such as physical and sexual abuse, bullying, systemic trauma, and complex trauma just to name a few. It’s also important to remember that trauma comes in all shapes & sizes. Sometimes trauma is big and sometime it’s small. I note this because in the eating disorder world, we often believe we are not “sick enough.” If we view our trauma as not “big enough,” we may not believe we deserve or need recovery.

I’m not going into depth of why certain attachment patterns develop as that is not within my scope of practice. However, it’s important to keep in mind that insecure attachment can play a role in eating disorder development. This post is to not blame or shame a parent/ caregiver but to bring education to how trauma and eating disorders intersect.

I’m late to the game but, happy 𝘗𝘙𝘐𝘋𝘌 month! ⁣

Something that totally blew mind when immersing myself into eating disorder treatment is the value of having a social justice lens

Marginalized communities including those who identify as LGBTQIA+ may experience eating disorders at higher rates than those who do not identify as such. WHY? This brings me back to my point about social justice. ⁣

When we think about marginalized communities historically, what might we ask ourselves? Is treatment accessible? Is treatment gender affirming? Has treatment been previously successful? Has the medical community provided a safe space without stigma or bias? Often times, the answer is no. ⁣

I think most of us know that we still have so much work to do in this world to promote equality, but I specifically come back to healthcare regarding this discussion. If you do not have friends, family or peers to support you, you may turn to the medical community. But what happens when the medical community is not educated or formally trained to treat those who are LGBTQIA+? Increased mental health conditions including anxiety and depression, which may lead to substance abuse, eating disorders and/or su***de or suicidal ideation. ⁣

If you are struggling, please know help is out there. An apology to the LGBTQIA+ community for the harm that has been done does not serve any justice. I am committed to educating myself but even more importantly learning from your unique stories, and how I can best support you to become an advocate.

𝐅𝐄𝐀𝐑 𝐌𝐎𝐍𝐆𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝟏𝟎𝟏

Buckle up bi***es. Health anxiety is real. How many times have you have been fear mongered into change? This is prevalent in both the diet industry and the healthcare community. These two spaces have something in common; they take advantage of your INSECURITIES and FEARS. The reason I compare the two is that they are both businesses. Businesses love to tell you that you need something. Why? To make 🤑🤑🤑🤑.

You are allowed to make decisions that honor your health but, if it's at the expense of your mental well-being, that doesn't sound like health to me.
