🌺THANK YOU FAMILIA!!🌺  We have reached the end of our Farewell Season, and we could not be more grateful for the outpour of support you showed us!   In the last 6 weeks we:⠀
* held 6 beautiful dance classes/events⠀
* had 680+ total registrations from around the world⠀
* made over $3,000 in donations!⠀
⠀
There have been many hard things happening in our lives and in the world in this time, and your choice to show up in our space is not one we take for granted. ⠀
⠀
We are proud to say that ALL proceeds from this season are going directly to our artists and teachers-- women and femmes of color at the forefront of their artistic and healing practices.⠀
⠀

We have reached the final week of our Farewell Season... thank you to ALL who have joined us over the last 5 weeks for our final classes, especially the 160+ beautiful souls who registered for the very special last Dancing Diaspora class with our beloved Marina last week.

TODAY the time has come for the most B I T T E R S W E E T culmination of our DD Farewell Season... our 💥Closing Virtual Dance Jam hosted and DJ'd by our very own DD Collective Member, the one-and-only !💥 let’s tap into this collective energy!!

This will be an open dance hour to groove and get down (not a structured dance class per say), so whether you’re in your kitchen, cleaning the house, or ready to make some space in your casita, turn up the volume and come celebrate in our Dancing Diaspora community one last time!

“I am a Mother, multi-faceted Artist and Bordercrosser. My roots are dug deep between Mexico and the South Tejas Borderland. My journey of doing anti-racist work has led me to look inwardly inside my own Mexican Culture and the (US) Dance field. I am constantly living in a flow of investigating the ways my own decolonizing journey has been/is embodied. I feel as though is an everyday conversation with the memory that my body has stored and how movement has become the language in which I communicate and heal my past generations.”

will share for one last time (yes, we’re in all the feels too) her signature Dancing Diaspora class, which she began in 2017 and was the seed that sparked our beloved Dancing Diaspora platform. 🌺

Rooted in Afro-Latin movements and rhythms, Marina’s class embraces the play between rigor and instinct, tradition and creativity, and ancestry and individuality that is at the heart of diasporic experience.

After 4 beautiful years of leading , I will be teaching my final DD class this Thursday. ⠀

Doing so over Zoom, without the magic of our beloved sweaty gatherings, is certainly a bittersweet experience. But, as I have learned from my elders, dance has the power to cut through space and time unlike anything else. ⠀
⠀
And when winds of change come rushing in, what better thing to do than dance? ⠀

Also... don't worry!! This is by NO MEANS the end of me as a dance teacher 😅⠀

Samba Reggae is the movement of Black Brazilians that developed Carnaval parade music, rising from the Black Pride Movement born out of Salvador, Bahia. Bora dançar pessoal!

Dancing Diaspora is dedicated to honoring, sharing, and reimagining dance practices of the Latin & African diasporas in dialogue with local and global histories of cultural resistance. Dancing Diaspora Collective is a group of local artivistas dedicated to curating ongoing programming for Dancing Diaspora in Los Angeles and beyond.⠀

OUR CORE VALUES:

All Bodies Are Dancing Bodies

Dance is our birthright. We are committed to making dance accessible to all bodies, doing this from our perspective as femmes of color from the Latin, African, and Asian Pacific Islander diasporas. We celebrate the dances, cultures, and histories of brown and black people and invite others to partake in this collective learning. We are committed to practicing equity-- social, economic, and racial-- and invite everyone to reflect on their individual role in our collective space.

Our Bodies Know

Our bodies know. They know what trauma they house. They know what medicine they need. They hold ancestral memory, stories of resistance, and infinite possibilities for healing. We value embodied practice, in its many forms, and the body as a generator of knowledge because our bodies have so much to teach us. Our bodies teach us how to combat toxic burn-out culture, connecting us with ancestral cycles-- menstrual cycles, lunar cycles, seasonal cycles-- that allow for rest, reflection, and regeneration.

We Belong In Our Bodies, We Belong in Community

Belonging is an active practice. We cultivate it through our bodies in movement, valuing individual expression and collective liberation. We are a reflection of the multiplicities we come from-- cultural, linguistic, ancestral, geographic, political, generational. Through radical embodied practice we make space for our individual and collective belonging.
