Last month, after 9 years of practicing Hakkoryu traditional Japanese jujutsu at the Shihan level, I had the good fortune to return to Japan and receive transmission of the techniques and principles of Kaiden and Sandaikichu, the last two levels in the system. I can safely say that it was one of the brightest highlights of my life, especially at the heels of my 55th birthday.
It was four days of intense learning and training, long and deep discussions at nights over simple dinners from 7-11, and sleeping on the floor upstairs from the dojo.
My experience would not have been possible without the dedicated companionship of my friends and mentors Scott Newkirk and Sean Bell, who have faithfully and generously trained me the past seven years.
And I am forever grateful to the Okuyama family, Nidai Soke and Waka Sensei , for their generosity to hold instructions just for me, as I was the only trainee that week. Takahashi Sensei and Ugo Sensei also attended the instructions, and together, everyone was incredibly giving and openhearted with their knowledge and wisdom.
By the time the week was over, I was physically exhausted, but mentally and spiritually uplifted to new heights. The depth of this practice is bottomless, and I am excited to explore more with renewed curiosity in this art.
