Paced bottle feeding is a wonderful feeding technique for all babies who are fed with a bottle, regularly or in addition to breastfeeding!

🍼What is paced bottle feeding?🍼
It is a bottle feeding technique in which the baby is in an upright position *as seen in photo* and the bottle is parallel to the floor allowing baby to use their strong suck to pull the milk out rather than the milk flowing automatically into their mouth. You know you are doing it correctly when baby pauses to breathe after every couple of sucks.

The Benefits of Paced Bottle Feeding ::

✨Paced bottle feeding can prevent overeating because your baby is in control of the amount of milk he/she drinks. When babies have control, they are able to recognize when they are full. This in turn helps establish healthy eating habits.

✨Paced bottle feeding can prevent colic symptoms and discomfort caused by gas. By paced feeding, your baby won't be gulping large amounts of milk and taking in excess air to keep up with the fast flow that traditional bottle feeding can cause. Sometimes parents might even think their baby has acid reflux symptoms because the baby is fussy and spits up frequently after feeds when, in actuality, baby is being overfed and in discomfort. If after paced feeding and the spitting up doesn't subside, I recommend talking to your baby's pediatrician.

✨Paced bottle feeding can protect the breastfeeding relationship because it is a method of feeding that mimics breastfeeding. It allows your baby to suck swallow and breathe in the same pattern it does when baby is breastfed. Your baby is going to eat more slowly and work harder for the milk, just like when breastfeeding. Some breastfed babies that aren't pace fed when given a bottle, end up having difficulties with breastfeeding because they have gotten used to the fast flow and instant gratification of the bottle. This is called flow preference, not ni**le confusion! However, if your baby is used to a fast letdown while breastfeeding, chances are baby will be okay without paced feeding.

Stuffed dates and chocolate chip lactation cookies 🍪 are just a few of the items available in my postpartum meal package or if you are booking postpartum care these are included!

For more information, please send any inquiries to amandakristina.ncs@gmail.com

These stuffed dates are rich in minerals (magnesium & potassium), antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, high in fiber and aids digestion. On top of the health benefits, they are super delicious 😋

Lactation cookies are similar to regular cookies but contain special ingredients that are throught to help with milk production. They contain iron and fiber, omega-3 fatty acids and lignans, which are thought to support hormone balance, along with B vitamins and proteins. While we can't solely rely on cookies for milk production, it is very important to remember the more frequently that milk is removed from the breasts, the more the body will produce it. Making milk requires a lot of energy and resources from your body and lactation cookies can help provide an extra boost of nutrition ☺️

This photo was taken by me during a postpartum shift when my client's baby was 2wks old.

What is neonatal galactorrhea?
The phenomenon when a newborn baby secretes a milky discharge from one or both breasts. Babies with galactorrhea have significantly larger breast nodules than infants without it. It is believed to occur due to transplacental maternal hormone. This means that estrogen is passed through the baby's bloodstream while in utero and can cause the milky discharge.

If you notice enlarged breast nodules and milky breast discharge, inform your baby's pediatrician so they can advise you. It usually resolves on it's own by the time baby is 2months old and no treatment is necessary unless the area becomes red or tender.

🚫 It is strongly advised to not stimulate or massage the breast tissue as it could lead to complications such as abscesses or mastitis🚫

Other possible causes of neonatal galactorrhea are:
Hypothyroidism
Hyperprolactinemia
Certain Medications
And a very rare occurrence- cancer

There are so many classes out there to take while you're pregnant like Childbirth Education , Breastfeeding, Infant Sleep, Newborn Care just to name a few. While all those can be helpful to prepare you for your birth and postpartum, Infant CPR is THE most important class you can take. If you can only afford 1 class, this is it! Emergencies can unfortunately happen and it's best to stay up to date so you are prepared.

When my daughter was 4wks old we had an incident that required us to call 911. It was the scariest situation to be in, but I was prepared and able to help her until the paramedics arrived. I thank my lucky stars I stay up to date with my CPR training every 2yrs! I recommend every parent to do the same ❤️
