Fascinating conversation about trauma-focused treatments, among them psychedelic assisted therapy, which we could have continued for hours. Recorded prior to the October 7th massacre, and relevant more than ever. During these times, survivors of the attack are receiving such treatments as an attempt to heal their trauma.

When a trauma expert is drawn to repeat his own trauma.

I very much appreciate Gabor Mate's contribution to the mental health field, and relate to the connection he emphasizes between addictive behaviors and trauma. However, his anti-Israeli "expert" opinions come from his personal and wounded place; and he causes wounds in the Jewish and Israeli community. No one wants war. Trust me that my friends and family would rather spend time with their kids, or go to a festival promoting peace and not worry that someone may r**e and murder them brutally.

Gabor keeps mentioning himself as a holocaust survivor and his abandonment trauma by his parents (was handed to another family to take care of him). As a clinical psychologist and trauma and addiction specialist, I learned (also from Gabor and other experts) that we tend to be attracted to our old wounds and repeat our trauma in different forms. I want to take a view on Gabor Mate as a case study (he may agree, if he knew it wasn't about him).

Possible hypotheses about the origins of his distorted views:

1. He either has an internalized-antisemitism ("death wish") and is drawn to a space where Jewish people are being prosecuted again. At the same time, he is making sure he is saving himself by standing on the enemy's side.
2. He has a strong fear of abandonment, and as a result, he abandons his own people, in order to prevent his trauma from reoccurring.
His use of power is an issue here. He is not a politician.

And his claim to have an addiction to "classical music"... give me and everyone else a break from this nonsense and harm it causes.

Nature Medicine published MAPS results for their second 3rd phase trial for M**A-Assisted Psychotherapy. 2024 looks promising for an FDA approval.
