When the inner child is full, the adult thrives in softness. Such a full-circle moment to meet former queens who paved the way and cheering on my pageant sisters who continue to redefine what it means to wear the crown. Miss USA reminded me of how radiant healing can truly be. đâ¨
Hereâs whatâs happening, scientifically, when the inner child is full:
1. Integration of the brainâs emotional and rational systems
⨠The amygdala and hippocampus (which store emotional memories) are no longer constantly triggered by old wounds or unmet needs.
â¨The prefrontal cortex (responsible for regulation, reasoning, and empathy) can now communicate more effectively with these emotional regions.
â¨This means fewer overreactions and more grounded responses; your emotional regulation improves.
2. Secure attachment and nervous system regulation
â¨When the âinner childâ feels seen, safe, and soothed, your attachment system (especially governed by the vagus nerve) stabilizes.
â¨You experience more moments of ventral vagal activation, which is the state of safety, connection, and creativity.
â¨Your body shifts from hypervigilance (fight/flight) or collapse (freeze/fawn) into a calm, connected rhythm.
3. Rewiring of implicit memory
â¨Early emotional memories (often implicit and pre-verbal) are reprocessed through neuroplasticity.
â¨Through therapy, mindfulness, or self-nurturing, new neural pathways form and ones associated with safety, worthiness, and love.
â¨Essentially, youâre âre-parentingâ your neural circuitry.
4. Increase in self-compassion and authenticity
â¨As the younger self feels validated, the adult self becomes less defensive, more open, and more authentic.
â¨The default mode network (which governs self-referential thinking) becomes less harsh, leading to more self-kindness and creativity.
5. Sense of wholeness
â¨When those younger emotional parts are integrated, thereâs less internal fragmentation and less inner conflict.
â¨In this state, joy, creativity, and purpose flow naturally because your system isnât using energy to suppress pain.
