Gateways is proud to feature Mia Esquivel, OTD, OTR/L, an Occupational Therapist at the Main Hospital in Echo Park.

On a daily basis, Mia collaborates with her team to develop and implement therapeutic OT groups on topics like stress management, nutrition, sensory education, and leisure skills. Outside of work, Mia enjoys rock climbing, baking, reading fiction, and spending time with her two kittens!

One thing Mia wishes people knew about her work is that mental illnesses can have a significant impact on daily routines and lifestyle. Through occupational therapy, clients can adapt, recover, and reintegrate back to their roles and routines.

Transgender Day of Remembrance is a time to honor transgender and gender-diverse lives lost to violence and to acknowledge the profound mental health challenges the community faces.

The threat of bias, discrimination and violence creates chronic stress and anxiety, making day-to-day life more difficult for many trans people. Research shows transgender and gender-diverse individuals are far more likely to experience depression, anxiety and other mental health concerns.

At Gateways, we understand that safe, affirming mental health care is essential. We are committed to supporting the mental health of transgender, intersex and non-binary youth and adults.

Today we pause to remember those we've lost, and to advocate for resources that ensure everyone is respected, supported and safe.

Across two locations, the Gateways Child and Adolescent Outpatient Program (GCAOP) supports over 250 clients each year through services including individual therapy, family therapy, case management, rehab services, and parent support groups.

GCAOP’s 17 staff and four interns supports clients during a critical time in their lives, offering a space to explore who they are and who they want to become as they step into adulthood. The team meets every client where they are emotionally and developmentally by looking at them holistically through their environment, family, and community outlets. The goal of GCAOP’s services is to help clients build resilience and thrive beyond the therapy room.

“We’ve learned the tremendous power we hold as child and adolescent therapists simply in being human. Leading with empathy and a listening ear can often be the most healing thing we offer.” - GCAOP Team

Transgender Awareness Week is a time to recognize the unique challenges faced by the transgender community and to promote greater understanding and inclusion.

Transgender and nonbinary youth often experience bullying, discrimination, and stigma, which can increase the risk of depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and self-harm. According to a study from Kaiser Permanente, transgender and gender-nonconforming children and adolescents are 4 to 7 times more likely to be diagnosed with a depressive disorder compared to their cisgender peers.

At Gateways, we are committed to closing this gap in care. Our adolescent expansion at the Echo Park location will offer specialized mental health support for transgender, intersex, and nonbinary youth, expanding access to compassionate and affirming care.

This year, Percy Village commemorates its 20th anniversary, with Gateways first offering services at this Boyle Heights location in November 2005. The team kicked off a month-long celebration with an Open House, alongside community partners including Mental Health, Aalpha Pharmacy, HOME Team, Impact Canine, and LAPD.

Percy Village is a critical component of Gateways’ comprehensive continuum of care, providing clients with a structured and therapeutic environment to support their transition to more independent community living. With a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, nurses, psychologists, therapists, case managers, housing specialists, peer support staff, and substance use counselors, Gateways’ staff is equipped to offer the behavioral and physical health care, and social support to help clients reintegrate smoothly into their communities.

Gateways is grateful to the Percy Village team for the incredible work they do every day to support our clients. To learn more about this team, click the link in our bio.

This Veterans Day, we honor the courageous individuals who have served our country and recognize that their sacrifices often extend far beyond the battlefield.

Research shows that about 23% of U.S. veterans have experienced PTSD at some point in their lives, compared to roughly 6% of adults in the general population

At Gateways, we are committed to providing trauma-informed, compassionate care that meets every client where they are, supporting their healing and resilience.

We extend our deepest gratitude to every service member for their dedication and sacrifice, and encourage veterans and their loved ones to explore mental health resources through Veterans Affairs.

Access to nutritious food is more than a basic need; it’s the foundation for overall well-being. When people struggle to find consistent, healthy meals, it affects more than their physical health.

A 2020 national study of low-income adults found that people with low food security screened 40% higher for depression and 38% higher for anxiety than those with high food security.

At Gateways, we’re committed to helping clients meet their most essential needs so they can build a strong foundation for mental and physical wellness. Our kitchen staff provides meals for our inpatient and residential clients, giving them the fuel to meet their other needs.

If you or someone you know needs help finding food support, call 211 or visit FeedingAmerica.org to locate nearby food pantries and resources.

November is National Family Caregivers Month, a time to honor the incredible people who dedicate themselves to caring for loved ones.

Caregiving can be one of the most meaningful roles a person takes on, but it often comes with real challenges. Many caregivers put others’ needs first, which can take a toll on their financial stability, physical health, and emotional well-being. According to Guardian, 41% of caregivers report low overall well-being — 32% higher than non-caregivers.

At Gateways, we understand how deeply caregiving can affect a person’s mental health. Supporting others requires compassion, patience, and strength, and it’s just as important for caregivers to find time to care for themselves.

This month, we celebrate the dedication and resilience of family caregivers everywhere and thank them for the essential role they play in the lives of others.

As we age, our physical health often takes center stage — but our mental health needs just as much care.

Isolation, loss, and the stress of changing life circumstances can all take a toll on emotional well-being. Too often, older adults face these challenges quietly and alone.

It’s time to bring mental health into the conversation for every generation. By recognizing the signs, reaching out, and showing compassion, we can help our aging community members live not just longer — but better.

As the days get shorter and the light changes, many of us feel more than just cooler weather, our mood and energy can shift too. The transition into fall and the approach of the holidays can bring both joy and challenge. While some find comfort in the season, others may experience more stress, fatigue, or feelings of isolation.

At Gateways, we understand how these changes can impact mental health for the individuals and families we serve, and for our broader community. Research shows that people living with less morning sunlight exposure are about 6% more likely to experience depression.

If you’ve been feeling “off," you’re not alone. Take a few minutes each day to pause and breathe, step outside for some natural light, and reach out to a friend or loved one. Small acts of care can go a long way in supporting your well-being this season.
