I’m so grateful to have celebrated the holidays with the best team anyone can ask for. When I started COPE in 2020, I never imagined we would grow to have such an amazing community of smart, talented, and diverse group of clinicians. With nearly 15 of us including psychologists, psychiatrists, post-doctoral fellows, pre-doctoral externs spread across 4 locations plus virtual, it can be hard for all of us to be in the same room in person, but we were able to nearly accomplish it - minus a few key people missing.

2024 was a big year. We increased our in person services to 4 locations, created more group options, including a Men’s Process Group, added a child psychologist, and added 2 psychiatrists as well as multiple therapists of all training levels that allow us to offer sliding scale as low as $40/session. Collectively, these improvements are manifestations of our collective passion to create a mental health space that is both high quality, accessible to a variety of people, and holistic. Although there is more work to be done and more plans to increase accessibility in the coming year, I’m hopeful that we’re on the right path and grateful to continue serving the community in the way we do.

As for 2025, we are looking forward to creating a women’s process group at the top of the year, expand our sliding scale fees across all 4 sites in LA, and increase our child psychology services at our West Los Angeles office.

I appreciate all of your support and sharing of this passion and look forward to helping serve you and the community for years to come.

With an immense amount of gratitude, happy holidays!

- Rubin

When I first started COPE a few years ago, I knew that the clinicians in our practice would be able to provide excellent treatment, but I also, unfortunately, knew that not everyone could afford that treatment. This is now changing as a result of COPE's recent partnership with UC Irvine.

Beginning in September, our licensed staff will be working with UC Irvine's Clinical Psychology PhD program to become a practicum site for doctoral students. These students will be seeing patients in our practice under the supervision of myself and other providers at COPE. This partnership allows us to be able to offer lower fee services and it allows our staff to stay involved in teaching and supervision, ensuring continued growth and connection with current clinical knowledge and literature.

Since the inception of COPE, my goal has been to offer our services at a fee that would be more accessible to a wider range of people. Although all our licensed clinicians slide their fees down for select patients, we have not been able to offer consistently low fees that we are able to offer with our new Psychology Externs. Fees will range from $50-100 based on availability and on a sliding scale.

If you or anyone you know is interested in receiving services by any of our providers at COPE, do not hesitate to reach out.

Thank you all so much for all the support and love through the years.

Really excited for this panel on Friday! I’ve been thinking a lot about cancel culture recently, particularly with this talk coming up. There’s so many pieces to it…what does it mean, what’s the utility of it, and what would change even look like. I definitely don’t have the answers nor do I necessarily think I should be the one answering them, but I do think it’s something we should be thoughtful of. It’s a term that’s used colloquially in our society but functionally we do the same thing interpersonally throughout our day-to-day lives. When we create boundaries or go as far as to “cancel” someone, it serves as a form of self-preservation in many ways. And while that self-preservation may be necessary, it doesn’t often leave room for evolution. So the question becomes who is responsible for the evolution? It doesn’t necessarily need to be the “victim” but there does to need to be a mechanism for rehabilitation and new learning. What does that look? I’m not sure. It probably depends on the person, the company, the industry, and our the society. I do believe that we can’t in the same breath espouse prison reform and rehab and then want to oust people with one fell swoop. The conversation needs to be more nuanced. Social media may not be the right place for the nuance, but perhaps it’s a place to start…I’d love to hear some of your thoughts in the comment section!

After participating in a 4 month consultation group, I am now certified in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Substance Use Disorders. Treating addiction has been a passion of mine for over a decade and participating in this process was really a really exciting opportunity to learn more.

The truth is addiction isn’t easy for anyone involved, so if you or a loved one need support in this area, feel free to contact me via my practice website (link in bio)!

Working in the VA’s Residential Rehab program, I was lucky enough to be among the first at our hospital to get the COVID vaccine. Hopefully in the coming weeks and months, the vaccine will become more widespread. And when it does, if you can, please do us all a favor and get it so we can go back to some sense of normalcy sooner rather than later. Please and thank you 😬

Followed COPE Psychological Center yet??...

For my therapists out there, how many times have people apologized to you for crying??? ... So many of us have been programmed to feel shame for showing emotions. I’ve heard it so many times when the person in front of me reached a breaking point and they say “I’m so sorry”. I always respond with “never apologize for showing emotions.” There’s no shame for showing up as your authentic self. If we were to apologize for anything, it should be the years that have gone by where we hid our emotions and tried to pretend we were “strong”. While that may have been protective and the right thing to do in that moment, we also have to recognize that at some point, that energy and those emotions need to come out. At COPE, we’re here to help you do that!
