☀️Dance Therapy Routine for the morning; sustainable and creative wellness
We can easily get stuck in a “right or wrong way” mentality around a movement or exercise practice. It’s easy for the mind to fall into the trap of identification to justify value. That is to say, sticking to only “correct” yoga poses as the only way to sustain a healthy movement/fitness practice, only weightlifting with the goal of increasing weights, or whatever system we reach for outside of ourselves to feel validated in our practice. What if we let this intention go completely? What if you had a routine, a “dance” of select stretches, strength-based and explorative movements that allowed you to rest in your body in such a way that felt good, natural and unique to you?
I want to point out that there are some incorrect ways of moving in the sense that they are known to cause injury and should be noted. But our bodies are smarter than most of us believe. If it hurts, it’s probably bad for it. It feels good, it’s probably good for you. Pretty easy rules to follow. If bones are gliding with ease, muscles are maintaining a light “burn” or sustained tension that goes away when you rest, then however you decide to move your body is acceptable.
I want to invite you to explore your body in a feeling/sensation-based way. Noticing and not analyzing. Give the brain rest and explore stretch and contractions, tension and release. Accessing all five senses.
Do familiar movements and use your weights. Do yoga poses and dance. Be still, lay on the ground, role around. Use your voice, your eyes, your ears. Explore and find new ways your body can move without seeking instruction from someone outside of yourself and allow yourself to be a professional of your own body. Because you know your body better than anyone else.
Dance within your body – not to look cool, not like the music videos. Dance with the original, primal intention of dance, which is to move with a sense of joy.
With love, joy and curiosity,
