Stop over exercising and under eating before thanksgiving dinner 🧡 !! Or any dinner !

When we show up to a meal feeling deprived we’re inclined to over indulge in a way that doesn’t feel good.

:: WHY ::
Like almost everything in life, diet is like a pendulum. Whenever we swing too far to one side we’re going to over correct to the other.

If we’re swinging all the way to the far left (under eating, over exercising, eating super ‘clean’, restrictive crash diets) our body will eventually overcorrect to find balance, and swing to the far right (over eating, eating poorly, loss of control around food, giving up on trying to ‘be healthy’).

✨ Our body is responding to deprivation, and trying to ‘save’ us by jacking up hunger hormones.

💔 These dramatic swings are not only emotionally exhausting but they’re STRESSFUL on the body.

What to do instead >> Aim for gentle swings near the center ~ where there’s balance, nourishment, some joyful indulgences and body loving foods. Avoid extremes. And take care of emotional health as well 🧡

STRESS + HEALTH 🌿🌻 If your body is constantly getting a surge of stress hormones it's going to be stuck in survival mode 🐅

Survival mode puts many of the things that make us feel well on the back burner (like having balanced hormones, good digestion, healthy metabolic function...) while it prioritizes survival mechanisms in the body.

Even though we’re usually in no real life or death situation, our body can not tell. Stress is stress is stress. Physical, mental, emotional, real or perceived.

To bring the body back into balance we have to make it feel safe by lowering stress (the threats). Swipe for examples!

:: Signs you've been running on stress hormones too long::
• Digestive issues
• Hormone imbalances
• More irritable, anxious or stressed
• Small things feel bigger
• Weight issues
• Skin issues
• Decreased memory and focus
• Inconsistent energy

There are a thousand diets and endless illnesses, with a supposed pairing for each. But this is what I’ve found to be true in nutrition:

Humans are like plants 🌱 in that all plants need sun, water and soil. They have slightly different needs when it comes to adding nutrients (fertilizers), but the basics are the same forever. Water, soil, light 🌞

(With exception to air plants, which one can think of as the psychopath of plants)

✨ The foundation of a diet that supports health is *generally* the same whether someone has burnout, hormone imbalances, anxiety, depression, infertility, etc…

>> From there, specific nutrients can be emphasized to support any imbalances in the body.

The method that’s often preached for eating intuitively is to eat mindfully, but it’s SO much more than that.

Yes, when we slow down, chew well, and are present, we’re more satisfied than when we eat quickly and mindlessly. But cravings are legit.

There are chemical, hormonal and biological processes that cue cravings. >>> So it’s not something that willpower or the practice of mindful eating can resolve.

:: ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR EATING INTUITIVELY ::

✅ Eat protein at every meal (roughly 25-40 grams per meal depending on weight, gender, activity, physical health and mental health.)

✅ Keep blood sugar balanced. Include protein, healthy fats and fiber at every meal and snack. When eating carbs, emphasize carbs from starchy plants in their whole form and be mindful of how much.

✅ Reduce processed foods in your diet and eat an abundance of whole foods from the earth to cue healthy cravings.

I once went to a chiropractor who told me that if I had better posture I would look skinnier. He put me in front of a mirror and showed me how my body looked “10 pounds lighter” with good posture, and then proceeded to have me cycle back and fourth between the postures, commenting on and touching my body.

At the time I was the deep in my eating disorders so instead of telling him to fu&k off it was another little seed planted in my garden of disordered thinking.

We receive the message that it’s important to be “skinny” everywhere, so much so we often don’t even recognize the messages anymore. We just subconsciously absorb them.

But just bc it’s said over and over doesn’t make it true. >> health isn’t about being skinny >> our minds are fluid and can be reprogrammed. Expose it to the right kind of messaging.

two simple hacks i use daily to balance my blood sugar and feel well 💫 swipe and save >>>

:: what balanced blood sugar does for me ::
• gives me sustained, even energy ♾
• makes me feel focused and alert 👁
• prevents anxiety from spiking 🙏
• makes it easy for me to maintain my healthy weight 🧘‍♀️
• helps me sleep through the night 💤
• helps prevent rapid aging (yay youthfulness 🐣) and inflammation (the root of many health issues)
• reduces the risk for future health issues like brain degeneration 🧠, cardiovascular disease and infertility

It turns out that balancing blood sugar is a key element in reaching most health goals. Yet hardly anyone is focusing on it (including an older version of me).

I used to eat in a way that was so exhaustive. I was vegetarian or vegan, eating only “healthy foods”, exercising all the time — and despite the effort it seemed to only be pushing me father away from health.

Then in 2018 I got “adrenal fatigue”, hypothyroidism, SIBO (gut issue), prediabetes, acne, anxiety, and depression.

Fast forward today and I am the healthiest I’ve ever been yet I am eating with the most freedom and joy.

:: What I focus on with my diet ::

💫 Balancing blood sugar

💫 Eating mostly foods from the earth (but i still eat pasta chips and chocolate regularly)

💫 Eating a diversity of whole foods (different plants, proteins, fats…)

💫 Getting optimal amounts of macro and micronutrients from food while adding in a few key supplements (like magnesium)

💫 Optimal hydration

♥️🌈🧚‍♀️ It feels good. It feels easy. And I’m still a little shocked about that, seeing as I made myself suffer for a decade trying to be healthy. My whole body is sighing with relief.
